Speaking of being a better defensive basketball team

A Larry Shyatt type may be a good addition to this staff.

TG at minimum needs to find some flexibility in his defenses and have some sort of zone option in the playbook even if its just a couple of possessions a game to throw a different look out there. It can often be a 4-6 point swing due to the disruption.

 

For someone with a better memory than I, what type of D did we have with Shyat? Seemed like it was a lot of help inside, but when we tried that this year, it led to an easy basket.

 

i think TG needs to become his own Larry Shyatt. TG brought Hovde on to handle offense, but has always described himself as defense-oriented.

 

Just wait until our defense improves and folks start calling on the Gators to score more points . I mean, I get it. The defense was a sieve this year and needs to improve. OTOH the offensive game was really fun to watch. To get to the next level, we will need a more balanced team. Sure would be nice to start with a defensive eraser like a Corey Brewer or Will Yeguete. This time probably lacked a lock-down defender.

 

Plenty of coaches hate zone because it puts you at a disadvantage on the glass and gives up plenty of open shots if you are patient, and it isn’t like Colorado shoots poorly.

The problem was help defense after switches or guys not getting enough depth in drop coverage. It happens.

 

And he is. We were 31st nationally last year in D according to KP, despite the loss of Castleton and KP the struggles early in the season. IIRC, we were top 20 nationally with in early February.

But we had massive turnover and shifted our style heavily in a different direction. Having a bunch of very inexperienced bigs didn’t help.

 

Colorado shot over 60 percent from 3 and over 60 percent in overall field goal percentage. Won’t win doing that.

 

I love playing matchup zone, but technically... matchup zone could leave the middle wide open if the offense moves it's players out of the lane. In a matchup, a defender would leak out and follow them. A traditional 2-3 zone would be better to clog up the middle. Matchup zone helps defeat intentional overload offenses.

Look how much we struggled when teams mixed it up on defense. We should also be able to do that, even if we stick to man D most of the time.

Also it would benefit our offense too. This year it showed they had little experience attacking zone and more zone in practice would help with that.

 

Let's just foul on every play cuz they can't call them all right?. Lol

Not a whole lot you can do when a Sears type guard runs it up your butt.
While scheme is important, so is effort and intensity.
If you look back at the 04’s run those two years (especially in the tournament), they worked super hard on defense every play. They were like white on rice, forcing turnovers, anticipation passes, full court pressing, etc. I remember a few times, when our lead slipped a bit, our defense locked down and stopped their scoring, Humphrey then made 2-3 3 pointers and game was over.
I wish TG’s defense can play a little like these teams.
