Which of the other 1800 special districts in Florida had their special district removed?

Was it? I thought they just changed the name of their special district and simply appointed DeSantis cronies to oversee it.

But all of these are dramatically different between California and Florida and that has plenty to do with Party affiliation.

I agree that people leave California because of the crazy taxes. But, you stated (I think) that thousands and thousands of people have relocated to Florida because of DeSantis.

But Disney is not being treated like everybody else. They're not even being treated the same as other special districts (I appreciate that the size and scope of Disney is unique, but so is the historic relationship). To my knowledge, DeSantis never had an issue with the historic arrangement. He even included a theme park carve-out in his social media law. Also, I don't think DeSantis is seeking to take control of other special districts. Everything I've seen indicates that Disney is being targeted for its political speech.

If DeSantis believes Disney should be punished for disagreeing with his education bill, I hope he is honest and says that very clearly. But I don't think he's going to say that because it might just be an admission that he's violating its constitutional rights.

How does a selective punitive government retaliatory action for legal use of First Amendment rights not smack of fascism in your mind?

Wow does this seem so obviously illegal and weak. Not sure if they are trying to bait litigation in a way that is favorable. But just bizarre. This seems to set up a federal constititional challenge

This is not a topic about Newsome, it’s about DeSantis. I don’t live in California and I thus don’t follow Newsome-nomics as closely as some here.

However, it’s perfectly acceptable to be critical of Newsome and DeSantis. I know that it is frowned upon these days to speak against one’s party, but it is lawful to do so. Well, maybe not in Florida these days, but most places you can be critical of two opposing politicians.

    You win.

DeSantis is the second coming of Hugo Chavez. Florida is an authoritarian shithole where leftists aren't safe to speak their own opinion. I suggest doing what us Cubans and Venezuelans did and leave while the getting is good.

I heard California is very welcoming of migrants.

That's not even enough to satisfy gator_lawyer's standard of authoritarianism, let alone fascism.

You see that's the thing about the hive mind, the answer is always the same, but they always get there in different ways under different definitions and under different standards.

Makes it awfully difficult to have a conversation with anybody.

Claims that everything is a "hive mind" then complains about how people have different thoughts and how difficult that makes it to fight against everybody having the same thought (i.e., a hive mind). Doesn't realize the irony.

We can make the case that being a special district is a unique privilege that Disney benefits from by far the greatest extent, but as usual you make valid points.

I'm not even bothering denying why he's doing this because it's incredibly obvious, but his lawyers probably won't say this is for punitive reasons even though everyone knows it is. But I really don't see how one can deny that this is punitive in good faith.

Did not know "First Amendment" retaliation was a crime in ordering investigations/ selective enforcement, but hard to see that the Governor is not violating that law regarding Disney if it applies to state government

Could start another thread but will put this here since the allegation of grooming children for sexual abuse has been a key argument around DeSantis' education bill, LGBT issues, and even sex education generally.

I'm currently listening to a book called Prophet's Prey about the FLDS church. The investigations and trials uncovered the widespread sexual abuse of children as young as eight years old. The boys and girls weren't allowed to date at any age since the girls would be assigned to marry the leaders in the community and have their kids. The community also had/has strict dress codes and gender roles.

Notably, there was no education about biology or sex. Other than some kids maybe seeing animals on a farm doing stuff, the kids had no understanding about sex - at least until they were victimized. I'm sure that made not only the sexual abuse itself easier (particularly at even younger ages) but also the ability to cover it up. Of course, discussions should be age-appropriate. But the fact these actual sexual predators purposefully kept kids in the dark about their bodies and sexuality, generally, is telling. It reinforces my intuition that ignorance doesn't keep kids innocent but rather puts them in danger.

Maybe Democrats are making this argument, but I feel like it could be made more clearly and assertively.
