Just a bit curious. Is this simply BN's nature? I just don't get the lack of urgency. We have had 3 straight losing seasons and next year's schedule is the toughest in the SEC. I think of game day decisions, 2 minutes before halftime and no urgency. Last years portal no urgency. We have dismissed 2 assistants with only one position filled, no real urgency especially when players are in the portal and early signing day is approaching. Why aren't we closing when we have portal recruits visiting? We have so many needs yet only one portal commitment. Another thing, we have so many staff people, like an army full, why isn't the portal process better? We have far more staff than most teams and yet we are lagging. No doubt we will have more attrition but will we have players to replace the ones we lose? Does BN really know what he is doing? Other coaches have done well utilizing the portal, heck fsu for one. And even when we have used the portal it hasn't been all that successful as of last season. Our qb was a big hit but most of the rest were misses. If it's a matter of deeply evaluating such players then that isn't very successful This may be far fetched but I'm still throwing it out there, is it possible, that BN realizes this job is way too big for him, too big of a pressure cooker, too big of an uphill fight that he is biding his time of inevitably getting fired. He will have a very nice pay check and could easily go back coaching in a different division. I get the sense BN is far more interested in investing in players character and future than that of wins and loses.
I hope that isn’t true, but if it is, then I’d say he has roughly six games to show that has grown a significant interest in wins over losses. If he doesn’t, and at the half-way mark it’s fairly obvious that we’re just headed for another losing season, then I think that’s when the new coaching search begins.
I think it is more of a reality check than anything. FLORIDA does not carry the same weight it always has. The program needs a real reset which is what we are going through right now. I think Billy is recruiting the way we need to, and I do think our NIL is in line with other high level programs. Kids just are not jumping out of their seat to come to Florida. Especially with the way we finished last season. BN is aware that he has to make the right hires for his staff NOW, but he might be dealing with a lack of candidates who we actually wanted. My guess is we dont hire a DL coach until after the early signing day, and then we bring in a "not so splashy" name. I actually think BN is a good fit for a large CFB program, but Florida is just really in a rut and it will take combination of high level recruiting, and winning games over a few years to get us on track. I think everything outside of the on-field performance is exactly where we want it in the process. Just need to be able to sell the vision, which is hard based on the results thus far
Yup. Just give up on everything for the next couple of years. Our team sucks. Our portal game sucks. Our recruiting game sucks. Billy doesn’t know what he’s doing, so he sucks. Next year is another losing season. Am I doing this right? Another one of these threads. Just awesome.
This is an unintentionally humorous statement. This is like saying our military is exactly what our country needs except for its inability to win a war. The “on-field performance” is the reason that CBN was hired. Everything else is a line of effort to get to an end state of winning football games, and that’s the only metric that can tell us if the “process” is working or not. Presently, it doesn’t look like the process has been that effective. One can say, “Well, it takes time.” Two years is a goodly amount of time to show some improvement. And I think three years is about as much as a head coach should reasonably expect to get his house in order and start performing sans excuses.
I forgot - the company line is Yeah Team, We're Great. No problems here. Sunshine and lollypops. O, and it's all correctable. Look, there are positives for sure. Mertz returning. Lag still coming. Top ten class at the present. A new hopefully good hire on the defense. Hopefully youth will rise up having prior experience. An older team next year. Yet, we still have lots of issues and with the past 3 years with little to no improvement the second year for BN, questions linger.
How do you know there's a lack of urgency? You have NO idea what's going on behind closed doors. None of us do. What do you expect, full transparency? Do you think Napier, the staff, the "army" and whoever else are just sitting around twiddling their thumbs?
I don’t keep up with everything but I’m not hearing anything about any of our Portal players joining new teams so it just seems this process and us getting new players from the Portal isn’t as rapid fire as NFL free agency.
I would hope so! That not to say that wins are not important, but these goals are not mutually exclusive. But the priority should always be on the kids, not a win at all cost approach.
If history has taught us anything, then it should be that coaches who do not prioritize winning are not around long enough to make any of these other desirable things happen. Lyle Jones may indeed have made a “champion of life” or two in his day, but no one remembers whether he did or not. They do remember, with increasingly distant memory, that he didn’t make any other kinds of champions there. Butch Jones fired at Tennessee: Wackiest quotes as Vols football coach
He didn’t ask. He said “I don’t get the lack of urgency.” For my part I’m content to assume that Billy is doing smart things until we see the results of who’s on the roster and can judge for ourselves. Real G’s move in silence like lasagna, but maybe he’s just striking out, or his strategy is garbage, or whatever. Time will tell.
The title: So why the slow pace? And I truly don't know what's going on behind the scenes. More questions than answers for sure.
It's the process, man. Just have faith that we'll start to see improvement and success somewhere down the road.
Oh I know that a coach is judged on his record (for the most part) and if BN does not turn things around it will result in a change at some point. However, I would argue that the 1st priority of the coach should be the well-being of the kids. The "champions for life" was just a gimic. I have no idea what Jones' priorities were as I never followed them that closely.
No. Patience has different meanings to different people. In the estimation of many here, three years is patience when it comes to a head coach achieving the bare-minimum assumption of a winning season. If that is not patience enough, then please express directly and specifically how many more consecutive losing seasons you are you willing to tolerate before saying, “Yeah, this guy just doesn’t have it.” Again, my number is three.
Distinct possibility. I’m leaning that way. Still, I would love to wrong and 2024 will tell me if I am.
