So Finebaum opened a huge nuke on the ACC after the ACC President gave his speech. FSU fans were angry at Finebaum's comments that the committee got it right so he explained why they got it right and it was the ACC's fault. When the vote came up among all of the Power 5 conferences to start the 12-team format this year, the ACC was one of 3 conferences that said this year wouldn't work for them so it got pushed to next year. It was the ACC President's own fault because had he not wimped out, FSU would have made it this year.

“I don’t mean to point fingers back at the ACC, but the ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips put out this manifesto earlier, outraged and 'unfathomable' — I think was his word — but he was one of those three commissioners that joined that alliance a couple of years ago that really stopped the 12-team playoff from being in existence today," Finebaum said, per On3's Grant Grubbs.

The ACC, Big Ten, and Pac-12 formed an alliance to stick together over common goals. In January 2022, Phillips said it was "not the right time" to expand past four teams.
