This reminds me of the abortion bans gone wild. It backfired horribly on the right. This is going to be another abortion backfire. And open carry. This overreaction will have a snap back effect. Again. And again. People don't want this extremism.

He's taking the only route he has. He didn't pursue it in the Florida courts to start because of how incompetent and hackish so many of the "judges" are. But Hinkle made the right call in how he handled the case.

Don't Say Gay already applies to high schools now. I guess they're proposing to ban all discussion of sexual orientation and gender identity entirely instead of just restricting it to only "age appropriate or developmentally appropriate" discussion?

Thanks - did not realize it already applies. I know they sold it as applying to third grade and below

Reading the Sachs thread, the Republicans are really working hard to brand themselves as the anti-free-speech party. BTW, this South Carolina law is really something:
They can't teach that race is a social construct? Are they supposed to teach that it's a biological construct? South Carolina Republicans leaning hard into eugenics, I guess.

Wow. I understand the emphasis on academic freedom, but those are also just bizarre and defensible positions. Even if there was no such concept as academic freedom, those would be really stupid official positions to take

Yeah, putting aside that it clearly violates free speech (academic freedom), forcing South Carolina schools and university to teach eugenics as fact, rather than a debunked theory, is idiotic.

Can't teach uncorroborated claims as factual, but they also want teachers to tell student race isn't a social construct?

More centralized control, one person rule in Florida, under Divine right

A House committee advanced a bill on Wednesday that would put the governor in charge of appointing all the members of the governing board of the Florida High School Athletic Association, a private nonprofit organization that oversees sports for grades six through 12 in public schools and other schools that choose to join or participate.

In addition to giving the governor control of the association, House Bill 225 would allow public schools to join other athletic associations. Schools would also be allowed to make “opening remarks” before events, and it would allow any student being home-schooled or in a private school to try out for public school teams.

Currently, 15 of the board’s 16 members are elected or chosen among public and nonpublic schools in each of the four regions in the state. The other position is held by the state education commissioner or their designee.

Under the proposed legislation, the board would be reduced to eight members chosen by the governor, plus the education commissioner.

This state may never recover from the damage caused by the current evil regime. They think they are serving a supernatural force. They may be, but not the one they think

Oh look, another power grab aided and abetted by our cowardly, feckless legislature.

Couldn’t a lot of the things DuhSantis is doing be undone via citizens initiatives?

Home-schooled students can already try out for public school teams. Interesting that they had to include them here when the real push is to let private school kids play on the public school teams.

I'm good with home school kids playing on public teams, those families are already paying for the public schools, they should be able to access those benefits. If the private schools are taking vouchers, they are taking money away from the public schools and I don't believe their students should be able to take money away from the public schools and have access to the public schools. You can do one or the other, not both.

That makes perfect sense. I wasn't bothered by the homeschooler part of it. Heck, arguably the greatest Gator of all time is a result of that system.

My problem was the centralization of power primarily, and second the obvious nod towards having a dominionist declaration of prayer before every game.

Yes, but citizens' ballot initiatives cost a crapload of money and involve a lot of effort.

Read somewhere today there’s legislation to dismantle the FHSAA (high school athletics) and give the governor the authority to appoint board members.
Dude is waaay out of his lane with all these power grab attempts.

I believe it passed out of House committee. Homeschoolers aren’t really the issue. I THINK that it is to allow students at voucher schools to play on public school teams.

The Florida legislature has a long tradition of ignoring the hell out of citizen initiatives that get passed.
