I’m getting the impression that a 4th grade reading level is simply the best you can do.

Not sure why you're @ing me. I've told people that fighting book banning with book banning is a counterproductive and bad approach. We don't defeat censorship by engaging in censorship of our own.

Woke up today to 62 negative ratings from Okeechobee. Another added to the list. Guess he searched out all my recent posts and downvoted them. Don't care about that stuff but that type behaivor is indicative of someone Im not interested in interacting with, even on a message board

There are a select few people on this message board who if you dare argue against their point or try to bring facts to the conversation, they’ll childishly downvote you or respond with laughing emojis or gifs because they can’t actually bring anything to the table and don’t know how to respond. Bluke and Q are the two biggest offenders of this. I might have to add Oke to this list as well.

As it often is, the issue here is about who decides. Let’s consider whether to ban a book in different instances:
    1. You find a book to be inappropriate for the grade level, but I don’t.
    2. I find a book to be inappropriate, but you don’t.
    3. 51% of parents find a book to be inappropriate, but 49% don’t.
    4. 49% of parents find a book to be inappropriate, but 51% don’t.
    5. All conservative parents find the book to be inappropriate, but no liberal parents do.
    6. All liberal parents find the book to be inappropriate, but no conservative parents do.
    7. Only you and another 10% of parents find a book to be inappropriate.
    8. Only you and another 1% of parents find a book to be inappropriate.
    9. Only you find a book to be inappropriate.
There simply is no single definition of “inappropriate”, so we need to determine whose inappropriate we are talking about. While you may be confident that your judgement is the most reasonable one, it is almost certain that others feel the same way about their own judgement.

    From Instapundit …

DESANTIS RESPONDS TO HECKLER IN BEST WAY POSSIBLE:

As DeSantis talked about parents’ rights in education, a woman in the crowd yelled, “The right to health care, to their kid’s health care, you’re a f—— fascist.”

The Florida governor was in Lexington, South Carolina, to push parents to be more involved in what their kids learn in school, ensuring they are not being sexualized through books and classroom materials.

“We say gay!” The woman added as the crowd began to boo at the heckler’s comments.

In response, DeSantis said, “Yeah, well, thank you, thank you. We’re not going to let you impose an agenda on our kids. We’re going to stand up for our kids. We’re going to make sure to do it right.”

As the woman was escorted out of the rally, the crowd gave DeSantis a standing ovation.

“Those people like that in Florida are the people we beat every single day on policy,” DeSantis continued.” We do not let them win. We win all these battles. We’re not letting them indoctrinate our kids, not on our watch.”

    This is the way.

My point is someone has to make that judgment for public school libraries, and someone isn’t a Nazi for making that judgment or a different judgment than the progressive judgment, nor is it “book-banning.”

In fact, it’s so normal that if this was done in 2007, it wouldn’t surprise me if nobody batted an eye.

Weak response from a weak man. If he really cared about protecting kids he’d do something about gun owner control rather that making it easier for some psycho to rip their tiny bodies apart with bullets.

I agree that there must be books that everyone in a district would agree on how appropriate they are, and therefore stir no controversy.

However, for many books the choice won’t be unanimous, and we still have to answer the question of who decides. It appears we have empowered a small minority to make this call. If a book can’t be banned by a single complaint, I think we have a serious problem.

In some ways, that’s how the law has been effective, but not how it was intended to be implemented.

I think a lot of that can be solved by clarifying exactly what books would violate the law and narrowing its scope a bit.

The balance of power used to give the schools too much power, now it gives the parents too much power. We need to meet in the middle somewhere.
