It's out on the New York times. I have no idea about the reputability of this particular Twitter feed. It was just the first one that came up in a search. Nothing else known yet that I saw
I will say that tons of right winger wackos are suggesting this is some plot because he's anti-NATO and something about vaccination protocols. I don't know. Those people typically lie but I don't know anything more
Articles I’ve read suggest the guy was leader of the leftist party in Slovakia, and that he was pushing pro-Russian and anti-American agenda, and a contentious issue was his intention to nationalize their media (i.e. to eliminate a free press). The popular refrain seems to be that he was wannabe Orban. Not exactly a good dude. Not worth shedding tears over. Although obviously an assassination is in itself a destabilizing event. Even if the guy is everything as framed above, it would be hard to suggest it’s a GOOD thing, considering he was popularly elected. I just think the greater concern is what happens in the aftermath. More often than not, violence begets more violence.
It's not like an assassination in that area (Slovakia is not technically in the Balkan peninsula) has ever triggered anything larger. Seriously, agree 100%. Parenthetically, the right-wingers aren't saying his death is a good thing. They are suggesting he assassinated because he came out against the WHO on vaccines.
Time for a re-fresher....or maybe just a fresher. I can't keep the two countries straight. Slovenia, Slovakia, and the constant confusion between the two Slovenia, Slovakia, and the constant confusion between the two **** The two countries have similar names, similar flags, and a similar history. The flags, first of all, are nearly identical - made up of horizontal stripes of red, blue, and white. The key difference is the crest - which, helpfully, is positioned on the left in both. **** Slovenia is a coastal country bordering Italy and Croatia in the south of Europe. But Slovakia has Poland and the Czech Republic as its neighbours, and boasts castles and mountains as its tourist spots.
It goes without saying, assuming it indeed was political assassination (and not some crazed robbery attempt), that they disagreed with his politics. I’ll go out on a limb and say the odds of him being shot over vaccines as the point of contention is near zero. Like some actually expect his assassin to be a Pfizer exec or something? I could see it more likely being his anti-nato or any press freedom views which it sounds like ruffled more than a few feathers. Shouldn’t be long to find out motive, they got the shooter (not that this will stop conspiracy theorists).
Well a left nationalist party, basically a "populist" party, so incoherent weirdo politics. Sort of like AMLO in Mexico. I dont think he was an Orban exactly, but he was definitely trying to position himself between Russia and the West, trying to walk a tight rope keeping everyone happy.
Been reading about the alleged assassin. A 71 year old published poet and writer who also worked as a security guard which is how he got the gun. Has expressed animosity toward Romani people and has praised far-right parties. Might be the most European thing ever, a racist that likes poetry and can only get a gun through his job.
