Not necessarily true. Artists don't need a poor model in order to create a better version. I doubt Marvin Gaye needed to hear an awful singer as inspiration to perform the anthem in 4/4 at a slow tempo w an RnB background. His was an idiosyncratic performance.
Side note: Maybe I missed the suggestion to "ban" bad performances. Was that the take?

Let's be clear. It was particularly horrible. ;)

Just listened to it again. I stand by my take. It's definitely subpar vs professional's standards, but i also definitely heard way worse. It's soft and sweet, though she misses a lot of notes, but it's not screechy, monotone, screamy, or such. Just a failed, subpar performance.

    Jmho/fwiw.

Yeah, see...no. this one was not screechy/screamy like RB's unforgettable mutilation.

The best anthem I heard was done by a mariachi band, so I have to agree here

With all due respect to her, she doesn't look like a model or Britney-style sex pot that record producers were like "all we need is a little autotune studio magic and its money in the bank." I'm sure she has some singing talent, but this was well outside her range.

She looks about the same as your average pop star. Men have done more for worse.

Absolutely incredible. But have to deduct a few points for being lip synced.

I watched a Docu on this performance and it was said she lip-synced due to jets flying over. I get it though

I’m sure she could have sung it just as beautiful live. I just recently found out it wasn’t live and was floored. Such an iconic performance.

I heard Ingrid Andress on the NPR tiny desk concert series and she was good.

Hope she is able to find the help she needs to recover.

Oh sorry, the take I was responding to suggested that we should only use a set of professional anthem singers for this task, since the varied artists we invite often produce renditions that are very bad.

If you wore noise canceling earphones all you would hear is silence. It was awful. No sugar coating it.

    Enrico Palazzo was better.
