I don't think he was shooting for 17 HS kids. It just turned out that way. LS1 on the last page explained it perfectly: "The biggest reason (for other shools signing more HS players)? They have more upperclassmen graduating or going pro. We're already the youngest program in the conference, so I'm not worried about taking a smaller class, especially considering the quality we got.)"
Yep. Of course losing XF and not getting an edge commit wasn't ideal, but not an issue. A lot of young talent at safety and edge already. Just need to get them next year.
While it was a bit disappointing to lose so many and slide down the rankings from where we were, I am digging who we did sign. I’m also glad we just didn’t reach to replace. We have quality and still have plenty of space to fill out with the transfer portal with players that may have more of an immediate impact.
definitely agree portal will help more this year. Or could help more if we score big time in it. Been reading UF still has 8 open ships. The portal needs to be attacked with unused NIL to get true difference makers. I don’t think we can lure Evan Stewart and Walter Nolan, but some of that level player is what we need to win in 2024.
They only dropped the limit on initial counters. That was the rule that said you could only sign 25 high school/JUCO players a year. You can sign unlimited classes now, but the 85 scholarship limit is still there. They actually suspended the 25 limit in 2020 because of covid and never brought it back. Then voted in October to get rid of it permanently.
We have brutal schedule in 2024 and we need plug and play college level depth right now... I say the portal is what we needed for this class more than a huge class of high schoolers. Napier knows this, he even touched on this in his post recruiting presser. He said he will hit the portal and I hope get gets good experienced, quality depth.
that was 2 years ago when the wr group for Wisconsin had NO speed. New offense at Wisc this year and with fast receivers and his production/utilization went significantly down. But I am sure you knew that. He is a Waukesha kid and I am pulling for him. My point is simply….temper expectations. He will be 3rd-4th receiver type, which to me is not a difference maker to an offense.
Interesting?!? Did Keotez Lewis, Skyler Bell, and Dean Engram know thay had no speed. Excuse me, NO speed? Lewis must have bought his track trophies on Ebay.
