I'm not aware of any sanction banning travel to Russia. There is a ban on some Russians traveling.

weapons to rapists and murderers killing civilians for profit versus weapons to a free country trying to defend itself from rapists and murderers so they can remain free. I can see how they are equal, said nobody with a lick of sense ever.

You've missed the point, couldnt they imprison Americans as leverage to drop/ease sanctions or end military aid?

For this piece of crap post I just put you on ignore. You should be proud of yourself. I think I have a fairly high tolerance for posts I disagree with but your post was just too much. You repeated the same thing several times. If you said it once I wouldn't have put you on ignore. Bye!!!

One has to ask of either of these two hostages were more valuable to Biden politically.

The minority young WNBA star that everyone talks about, or the forgotten Marine that most of us never heard of.

No idea if that played a roll, but politics always seems to.

Kudos to CNN for really saying his name today. Sincerely. They have been pretty on point with this.

Ok, so we were and continue to be willing to risk that. Nothing new here.

Isn't that a question for the Russians? They weren't giving up Whelan for anyone, so it seems obvious who is more 'valuable' to them or who's crime they considered more serious or legitimate (President Deals couldn't/didn't get him out either). The question for Biden was get one or get none.

Paul Whelen is wondering who and when we will trade for him.

short term, I would believe it had an impact as it disrupted existing deal flow. Long term, likely not much more than imprisoning a murderer or drug trafficker lowers the murder rate or drug imports. But if you let all the murderers and drug traffickers loose, the rate would likely go up.

They consider Whalen a spy. He denies it, but there is not much value in that statement (if you look at the decision tree, a spy would claim to not be a spy and a non-spy would also claim to not be a spy). So we will likely need to trade a spy for him, not a regular prisoner.

Have you read their statement? They understand that Whelan's release was not on the table.

A reminder that Whelan was imprisoned in 2018 under Trump, who was bff’s with Pootie..

He did free 5000 or so Taliban members though.

It is just a massive amount of hypocrisy trying to claim how bad an international arms dealer is when we are the source of a huge international arms trade based on how easy it is to get guns here and how little we know about them once they leave the store. Especially given that many of the people complaining about this guy are the same people that would never consider threatening that trade if it had literally any cost to their own convenience.

Almost all the guns in the drug wars come from the US. Heck, a lot of the people involved in that trade are former drug dealers that realized shipping guns south was similarly profitable and had a much lower chance of resulting in negative legal consequences.
