POLL: Should the US trade Viktor Bout for Brittney Griner?

Did you feel the same about the college kid who vandalized a hotel in NK and was sent back brain dead? Or do you think you’d have supported a prisoner exchange for some unsavory Korean?

 

Very different scenario. I would have gladly given them Viktor Bout in that case … but only on the condition that they kept Taylor Swift.

I did not realize originally that Bout had completed more than half his sentence already.

Still a “bad” trade, but if they weren’t going to give up Whelan + Griner it is what it is. Better to bring home 1 than to bring home zero.

 

To say I am furious over this is an understatement. All the Liberals on this forum would be calling for Trump's forced removal from office if Trump had made this trade.

Brittney Griner knew what she was getting into going into Russia. Yes Russia's laws are BS but no one forced her to go there. Yet now the idea of the arrogant American who believes local laws don't apply to them will be pushed even more. It was Brittney Griner's responsibility to know the local laws in Russia, it wasn't out responsibility to bail her out.

To say I am pissed right now is an understatement. If I was a member of the military I would put in my resignation today. Talk about a slap in the face to the military. I'd love to see every member of the military actually protecting the country (could care less about the military higher ups who are essentially just politicians) walk off the job. This country no longer deserves being protected.

You're right. If we were going to give up Bout it should've been for Whelan, a marine who served and loves this country. Please tell me why Griner should've been released ahead of Whelan?

 

If we want to go with speculative innuendo, the question no one seems willing to ask is why any of Paul Wheelan’s plight even became remotely a public story until Griner was detained? And that’s before even talking about who is on a plane right now and who isn’t.

 

So I’m told.

But, addressing your actual point, the principle here is not about the value of the hostage. I view Whelan and Griner equally as political prisoners. And I would have made a trade for them but only for political prisoners of our own, not an actual criminal. An alternative to that is putting a requirement for their release as a non-negotiable element for lifting U.S. sanctions on Russia after the war is over. This deal merely confirms to other nations that they can kidnap our citizens and get whatever they want for them. Only Griner’s family shouldn’t care about that aspect of this trade.

 

What's worse is that we couldn't get them to take Kanye West in the deal.

Put him in the same cell with Taylor Swift, maybe? Make them work out their issues from 2009? On second thought, he’s nuts enough already. Years in a Russian gulag would be enough to make a well-adjusted person go crazy. I’d give an off-meds person like West no more than a month until he turned cannibal or something. Russia could just keep threatening us with his return to get concession after concession. You’d see some rare moments of bipartisan cohesion as we traded away Eastern Europe, but that would be the only positive.

 

Glad I could entertain you but this isn't a laughing matter. This is utterly pathetic. We literally value an entertainer who hates this country more than a marine who served this country who has been imprisoned much longer.

Brittney Griner better be on her knees kissing the ground and never saying a single negative thing against the U.S. again. We all know that won't happen. Brittney Griner won't learn anything from this. If anything she'll probably complain she wasn't released sooner.

He was kicked out of the Marines for bad conduct, he's not a war hero, and he might actually be a spy. Britney Griner has definitely done a greater service to humanity by dribbling a basketball, the bar is pretty low here.
