Way of the world. They had an opportunity here unlikely to repeat. Plus they know that Western democracies may not be like them, but they can only be pushed so far. Again, this is nor a new dilemma.

Apparently in a one for one prisoner exchange for Bout. That is a terrible move for the US.

So Paul Whelan, who has been there longer, I guess wasn’t important enough to come out first, or with her.
Terrible deal that smacks of all the worst of domestic politics.

Yeah if you are mad about someone unjustly imprisoned being freed, reexamine your priorities. I hope that can spring the other guy too, hopefully they keep those channels open. But his situation is quite different.

It made anyone traveling to Russia a target for false arrest to become collateral for future prisoner exchanges.

I don’t know enough to really have an opinion on whether this is a good or bad trade. I do know that Griner, her family and friends are happy.

We all already are. This changes nothing. The only difference here is this was publicized.

Griner released For the Merchant of Death?
But not Paul Whelan along with her.
    Another Biden Administration fail.
No one has more blood on his hands than Viktor Bout other than Vladimir Putin. Whelan is an American hero.
    Griner hates our government.
    Bad negotiation.

Leaving her in prison would be a "win?" Also there is another thread going.

One can be happy for Britney and still recognize how bad this was on three or four levels.

Russia played us like a Stradivarius. Bravo Mr Putin, you got Biden yet again. The war is back on with the best arms dealer to ever walk this Earth. Russia planned this from the beginning, including putting on a court display for all the world to see.

Arms dealing is a hydra. You cut off one head and two spring up. I think this is a win for an American family. I am not sure that it won’t spur more arrests for leverage. I’d ban all Americans from Russia.

Sure. He was just the person we could rightly punish. The arms dealings haven’t stopped my friend.

Now the worlds biggest arms dealer (us) have more competition though. This is a win for the free market if you think about it.
