    Your words bespeak pervasive frustration and anger in America now. I, too, see it in a large segment of our population, a few of whom commit these utterly senseless acts. We can leave for another thread why so many are so angry, but I at least can assert without equivocation: today's republican party plays on it and thereby encourages it. To name just a few: look at Trump, Gaetz, Jordan, MTG, Boebert, and so on and so on.

    Motive for this tragedy is of concern to me. Highland Park is an upscale Chicago suburb and 30% of the population is Jewish.

    Your link shows active shooter mass shootings have risen a great deal since 2000. Per your link there were a total of 20 active shooter mass shootings in 2000, 2001 and 2002. There were 100 active shooter mass shootings in 2018 2019 and 2020. A five fold increase. There is only one party that has stood in the way of reasonable gun control measures and that's the Republican Party.

    That is what I thought when I heard about it too. Time will tell what the motive was. They have to find the guy.

    ZAKA: Elderly Jewish man among the dead in 4th of July shooting

    The ZAKA organization reported that an elderly Jewish Man was among the dead in the mass shooting at a Fourth of July parade in Highland Park, Illinois Monday.

    Several other Jewish people are among the wounded, Zaka reported.

    The report follows a statement by Israel's foreign ministry that a number of Jewish people were among the casualties in the attack, which left at least six dead and 19 wounded.

    Gun deaths per capita are about the same as the late 1960’s. So, is it deaths that are important or group deaths only?

    We are a sick society. And, yes, the prevalence of guns makes our sickness more demonstrable and permanent. So, we need to address our sickness AND the easy access to guns.

    Didn’t know that. Jews and people of color seem to get the brunt of hate, that’s for sure, and there definitely is a climate of hate here, though other countries (which don’t have easy access to guns) are experiencing it, as well.

    Remember the expression of it in Charlottesville? It’s always been with us. I know you remember segregation and the violence when we grew up in Gainesville. I still remember this hate vividly and how as a youth I could not understand it.

    But it’s not confined to the South. What is striking is that it’s almost always whites on the right, many of whom profess to be Christians. Members of today’s Republican Party are yesteryears’ Dixiecrats, and they are stoking and taking advantage of the same imagined fears as they did then. Trump is the embodiment of that, and it has gotten worse since he came onto the political scene. I didn’t support the policies of any Republican President from Eisenhower on, but I sure did respect them. They wouldn’t have put up with what Trump and his apologists and enablers do today.

    Who has historically tried to lead us out of this morass? Democrats from Johnson on. Who has opposed that and today refer to Democrats as “libs”, “socialists”, “snowflakes”, and so on as nauseum? Right wing republicans. (The rest of republicans are dismissed by the right “RINOS”.)

    Sorry to be on my soapbox again, but there are so many warning signs, and they’re coming almost exclusively from one end of the political spectrum.

    I invite those on the right who I haven’t blocked to show me where I’m wrong. I’m always willing to modify my opinion where it’s shown to be wrong.
