Are we addressing the gang shooting that plague almost every big city in America and make up most of the violent gun acts (after suicides…mental health) or is that going to pushed aside and only look at MASS shooting or only look at school shootings? Are we going to pretend that the vast VAST majority of legal gun owners are not law abiding citizens that carry and store their guns carefully and respectfully and that the vast majority of gun violence stems from those who have no respect for laws and for life? How many red flags are missed in almost every mass shooting? You can blame the tool all you want… the problem lies with those that CHOOSE to harm others for whatever reason.
That is false. Most homicides are not gang-related. Depending on the study, gang-related homicides account for between 9.7-13% of all homicides. The vast majority of homicides do not involved gangs. MYTH: Gangs are responsible for most U.S. homicides - GVPedia
I didn’t say homicides… And in this case mental illness was known and documented The fact that he had an unregistered gun and carrying it illegally was known and documented And what was done? Nothing. Not a single thing.
You said gun violence after suicides. There are broadly four categories of shootings: suicide, homicide, justified shootings for self-defense or some other justification, and accidental shootings. You eliminated one category: suicide. Are you saying that the percentage of justified shootings and accidents that are gang-related is high enough that the vast majority of shootings are gang-related? Any evidence to back this?
Its not just crime, how could a good mental health system exist in a place where anyone who is depressed can get a gun, or might have one already. People are going to get mad and angry, and if they can get guns, they are going to do much more damage if they choose to act on it. There's no mental health system that can stop people from getting mad or depressed and acting out on it, particuarlly when material conditions excacerbate the things that might make people feel despair or anger in the first place. Mental health cant cure poverty, alienation and the despair it creates.
You make great points; all those other countries in the world with low gun death rates have none of these problems. Absolutley perfect record of mental health; never take pharmaceuticals; don’t take drugs; alcohol and all grow up in perfect homes. That’s the reason they don’t have 5x the gun deaths they would if as nutty as only the USA is. ThankYou for the amazingly simple answer that was roughy in front of our faces. If that’s the case then maybe our country deserves to be wiped off the map since we are the only degenerates in the world. We are clearly a danger to the world.
It is time to repeal the 2nd amendment. Freedom is for responsible citizens. Based on who they are voting for and what they are doing, its time to take that freedom away.
would decreasing the number of guns in circulation decrease the number of illegal ones available to those who want to break the law with it?
How. How are you going to put a dent in the guns in circulation? Ban ar 15? Doesn’t do anything to the 9mm. Ban all guns? Won’t come close to stopping bad guys from getting them. All it will do is slow do the law abiding innocent enthusiasts who won’t be able to get one. I’m all for better background checks, red flag laws, licensing on a tier system but I also understand that this issue is far far more complex than the BAN Guns crowd wants to see.
This guy was just a law abiding gun enthusiast until he killed 3 people, this distinction is always ex-post facto. Having a gun can turn anyone into a bad guy, because it makes you less afraid of retaliation and it makes it easy to kill when you think you are in some kind of danger. Want less bad guys? Better figure out how to reduce the number of guns out there, legal or otherwise.
Where do you think illegal guns originate? Do you think gun companies are producing guns illegally and selling them initially into the illegal markets? Or is it a combination of theft from stockpilers, sales in grey markets (e.g., private transactions and gun shows), and sales from legal owners into illegal hands, which is untraceable due to the lack of tracking.
I'll throw out a few quick ideas, but I am neither a 'ban all guns' person or someone who really knows much about guns at all. But how about registering all guns and making the owners responsible for them? Background checks for private sales? A fine or penalty if a gun registered to you is found in possession of someone else, a greater penalty if the gun is used in a crime? Those are off the top of my head.
If you like guns, then you like higher crime than places that don't like guns. I don't make the rules, that's just the results.
On gun violence, the United States is an outlier it’s all of America, frankly “Among 64 high-income countries and territories, the United States stands out for its high levels of gun violence. The US ranks eighth out of 64 for homicides by firearm (age-adjusted). Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands, two US territories, rank first and third on that list. Firearm injuries tend to be more frequent in places where people have easy access to firearms, according to findings from the 2018 Global Burden of Disease study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA).
