About the Duggars and Gothard/IBLP. Watched the first two episodes tonight. Very interesting.

    I watched it this weekend.

Knew much of it before including about Josh Duggar and the family's political connections. I did not know about the centralization of the programs or the details about Bill Gothard. Interesting to me that protestant evangelicals for whom big families are so key followed a man who himself never married and never had kids.

Putting aside the wisdom of corporal punishment, generally, the roleplay scene of spanking the boy was super weird to me. Was it necessary to literally bend the kid over his lap to make a point? Also struck me when one of the women was talking about how she kept curling her hair because curly hair was preferred. Did I miss where Jesus talked about straight hair versus curly hair?

I saw glimpses of the show back when it was on. Never an whole episode but a few minutes here and there.
And I read a story about this documentary a few days ago.

Seems way too depressing to watch. Whole thing is sad.

We have watched only 2 episodes so far. Wow. I knew very little of this. Very disturbing and I'm not sure how this worldview and close variants play into our larger culture

Didn't the Duggar's 15 minutes of fame end a long time ago?

Yea, but it's unclear how much the movement that they were part of is still wielding influence

Probably but they have been able to monetize it to a net worth of $3.5 million.

My interest is not regarding the family itself but about the societal impact of like minded individuals, which I fear is more substantial than I realized. That said, I sense my wife is losing interest in the show after 2 episodes.

In a family of over 30 now I assume, that isn’t exactly living the high life. Would have thought it was more.

But as posted by others earlier, the Duggars really creep me out.
I imagine they have a hidden dungeon somewhere.

    Think:
Woman with the Dragon Tattoo / Golf Club scene........."whack"

Always thought those Duggars were kinda like minded as the folks in:

    Heavens Gate
    Waco
    Peoples Temple

It was a strange era for “Reality” TV.

Duggers, Duck Men, Kate plus 8 minus John, etc.

Why can’t we find better uses of our time?

Be of good cheer DWC - Perhaps if fate is good to us, we meet in Jax to watch a Gator beatdown of "Them-People" - slam a few bottles of mescal (u get the worm) and destroy all brain cell memory of those "other" people (virgins) from Hollywood.

I didn't know who Bill Gothard was until I read this thread. Looked him up ... Geez, thousands of followers, focus on young people ... then the women, including minors, start stepping forward and talking about how he abused them.

With churches, schools, boy scouts, bosses, etc ... It's depressing what people in authority have done. I guess ever since we've had anyone in authority.
You wonder if Mayberry ever existed ...
