Precedent, and I'll leave the whole Celtics thing alone.

Hmmm . . . can you explain the political angle suggested behind hockey / the Lightning?

    Serious?
If so, think racial makeup of the respective leagues.

Ok, obvious that hockey demographics are predominantly anglo. Hockey culture, however, is in no way grounded in political or racist ideology. IOW - if a person loves hockey and doesn't care much for NBA or NFL, it's in no way an indictment on or should be a question of their character. The truth is that the sports are vastly different. Hockey, btw, is the absolute best live professional sport. It's not even close.
On topic: If a person proclaims "I won't watch the NBA or NFL" there is at least cause for question. Subtle difference, but yes?

Oh as do I. Most I know do not talk about it, but partially believe it in some way. They firmly believe the generalization that Democrats "cheat" in elections (without proof and contrary to the proof in front of them). Too many I know do not care and support Trump and the conspiracy theories anyways, at least indirectly or partially. No matter how many crime and treason indictments Trump has or will be getting. No matter how many Republicans witnesses have testified against him, including many that directly served under him and side-by-side with him. Rationalization is a strong force and affects many people, impervious to intellect or education.

Well that long first paragraph diatribe totally missed the point and was totally irrelevant to my post.

Secondly, and probably off topic but I couldn't disagree more as to hockey being "the best live sport". You love hockey, good for you. I have a couple of Canadian friends that feel the same. However, it is the only sport I've walked out of before it was over and have turned down countless free tickets over the years. Beyond boring to me. (Feel free to bring on the bacon lightning fans)..

For me it's too loud. I have to take clients to Lightning games and I am disturbed by the decibels. Takes me a few days to fully recover

You need box seats, much quieter for business.
Done that a couple times with friends who are fans. Most in the box, not all, don't really follow the play, just eat, drink, talk and only watch the goal replays or fights.

Well, the paragraph was neither too long nor a diatribe, but let's not quibble. My impression was that you wanted to lump hockey fans in with those who eschew the NFL/NBA for political or potentially race-based reasons. From my experience, that's not true of hockey fans.

Your impression was incorrect which I've already pointed out. Has nothing to do with life long hockey fans. .
Surprising that the comparison/ friends motivation is that hard to figure out. I could clarify further but seems like a waste of time at this point.

Sure, please clarify because I don't have any idea what point you are trying to make about hockey fans. Thanks

I’ll take a crack at this. NFL, NBA, NHL. One of these is not like the other in terms of players. If someone is making a big deal out not watching two of these….

I don’t think he’s talking about hockey fans in general.

I get that, but are you suggesting that sports fans would latch onto hockey because the players are white? That's patently untrue. Hockey is a cultural game, in some ways similar to football in the south. I just don't see the former football/hoops fans suddenly becoming hockey fans for racial or political reasons. OTOH, I DO see football/hoops fans disenfranchising themselves to the pro sports markets for political/racial reasons.

I think people who make sure to bring this up have other motives than just talking about hockey.

If by "this" you are referring to hockey, then I disagree. It's the "I don't like the NBA" crowd who fits your narrative from my experience.

No, they’re bringing hockey up RELATIVE to the NFL and NBA. “I’m watching hockey BECAUSE I’m not watching the NFL or NBA” I think that you’re agreeing with me, actually.

This idea loses me, babe. Honestly, I don't know of anybody who espouses such a sentiment. If they do, they must be the oddest (pardon me) redneck around. Like the person I initiated this convo with, most southern folks know next to nothing about hockey and they are not about to divert their attention to it for the sake of sports-based racism/politics. I don't doubt that it exists in some remote pocket, but I've spent some time now in hockey land and there just isn't anything to do with politics or race in it; they genuinely love the sport and in many cases love it in lieu of football/basketball. IOW - I dispute the notion that folks are leaving the NBA/NFL to become hockey fans "just because." If that's a thing, somebody gonna hafta substantiate it beyond the rando anecdote.

Again you've totally missed the point or maybe just watching too much hockey lately. You're smarter than this. Swampbabe is absolutely correct.

Also, not sure what your 4th sentence is supposed to mean since I'm the one you responded to. That sentence sounds a bit like a hockey snob to me. Not being a fan, doesn't mean you know nothing about the sport.

    In simple terms:
NBA - BLM politics and social justice issues
NFL - Kaepernick, need more black coaches, racial justice, etc.
NHL - none of the above
The comments have nothing to do with loving hockey. As I stated, the guy probably doesn't even watch much hockey or know the players, just making a political point, i.e. he doesn't have to hear about those issues in hockey. Its not a reflection on the average hockey aficionado.. He could just as easily said pro tennis, college baseball, etc.
