Disagree. We don't throw people out of school for being stupid. Why should we throw them out of school for being racist?

It's a public university. They'd probably argue that it's targeted harassment. I'd say it is free speech, as repulsive as it is.

Ok - evidence of students being expelled for racist behavior. How about your rationale? For example, do you believe all of these decisions were justified? Or more to the point, should every student guilty of racist behavior be expelled?

I was just wondering if it happened at a private school, Vanderbilt staying with the SEC as an example, would it be a first amendment violation? I would say no.

Not for Vanderbilt to impose consequences. But I am of the view we should ask private universities to voluntarily provide the same speech protections as public universities.

Im sure every school, public or private, has a student code of conduct that includes language about these sorts of behavioral issues (including displays of racism).

Does every kid that does stupid racist shit get expelled? Surely not. But if they are dumb enough to be front and center doing it or manage to go viral, I wouldn’t exactly weep for them to face discipline. Of course in Mississippi that’s how they roll so I wouldn’t expect anything, esp with the freakshow Governor expressing support for him.

You didn't ask me, but I think it's a dangerous standard to expel students for merely racist speech. There's not even a societal consensus on where that line is. Targeted harassment is a different issue. But one instance of racism shouldn't qualify imo, unless it's sustained over a period of time (like following a student for a few minutes and yelling slurs at them).

Probably true re: CoC but I'm not sure to what extent those codes dictate speech. To your second Q: Absolutely true, which is why an absolutist policy is risky. Nobody really knows what will or will not go viral these days and that should probably not be a criterion for expulsion.

For me it’s not about official punishment. I just wish our society would reach the point where he would feel some shame and the need to apologize for social standing.

Instead, I fear his social status will be elevated. Many protesters for Palestinians will likely face a scarlet letter that will limit future job opportunities. Make of that what you will.

But I fear this young man will not need to explain poor judgment in his youth. This will help him in the world. It’s not a matter of being forever branded for a youthful mistake. He will not even have to label it a mistake. Already, Trump has used it in a commercial, a sitting Miss. Congressman and the Miss. Governor have celebrated him or his crowd. He will have an immense amount of support.

For Ole Miss I’d give them an award for fitting in. Everywhere else I’d say think or say what you want but harassing someone using racism crosses the line.

For what it's worth the Ole Miss kid was kicked out of his fraternity, which is probably a devastating life blow for someone like that.

That’s surprising. And while he stood out, he had plenty of support behind him. Wonder if it was more being identified and attracting too much attention

applaud your calling it what it is. That dipshit opened himself up for a late night beat down, and likely kicked out of his fraternity. But as repugnant as it was it’s still free speech.
