I would be interested in knowing what would be the acceptable number of injuries-or deaths- over what period of time before this fun activity should be addressed as a problem. Fifty injuries over 5 years? 10 injuries over 2 years? Fewer than 3 deaths? How many is OK?

Interesting that you should mention DUI. The fact is that the vast, vast majority of those who drink and drive don't get into accidents. Does that mean we shouldn't have laws against it? Or does the potential for death and serious injury justify the prohibition, and the actions taken to police it? Same principle for storming?

I will ask again: if DJ Lagway or Walter Clayton Jr. we're injured by rival fans (intentional or not) during a storming episode, would Gator fans still feel this activity is OK? Or would we insist that storming be strictly controlled?

I must apologize. I have been an Emergency physician for my entire career. I tend to see a skewed population of injured individuals from activities that most would consider to be safe, or at least "harmless fun". So I am not the most unbiased observer. I don't believe that kids, or adults, should be bubble wrapped. Life happens.

But let's not take unnecessary risks after a big victory, or a defeat on the road. I was at Florida for both undergrad and med school. I never missed a football home game, and I went to countless basketball games. I never felt my college experience was somehow diminished because we never stormed.

The Gator fan in me would love to do it. But the ER doc in me says "no".

So if they implement the rule we buy tickets to every game, dress as fans of the opposing team and storm the field every game………. and BOOM!! 12-0 BABY! Playoff here we come!

    Omnipresent

I hear ya. I never stormed anything. I just HATE how risk averse with a lack of evidenced based practice we’ve become as a society. I’m a social worker/ I advocate for better/safer systems for vulnerable folks all the time … rarely do I get what I ask for. What I do get is an over abundance of caution based on risk to property, money OR risk to a highly paid worker but never the person we are caring for OR a front line worker.
So that’s all I’m suggesting- Is we continue to take away the potential for a few kids to have fun at the risk of property damage under the guise of safety. And if it was actual safety then I can give you (as I’m sure you can as an ER doc) a looong list of riskier behavior in the stadium, around it, at any frat house (especially for women etc) than storming a court.

    Right here
I think you’re the first to raise this issue, but I believe this is the biggest weakness of the idea. Still, I don’t think this issue is fatal, as the home team controls the field, and their security should be able to repel the many home fans, let alone the small number of visiting fans. But you have rightly identified the one aspect where Byrne’s plan does not well align the interests of the parties with that of the conference.

The irony of it being the bama AD crying about it is lost on some. In order for you to take a position like this you have to have a team that doesn't lose very many games. Think Tenn dumping the goal posts in the river or Vandy last year.

Court/field storming doesn't happen that often because upsets like that don't happen very often.

If this went to pass, I'm going to work for Alabama and get 5 road victories easy peasy. How? Bama fans travel very well and I'd have them wearing the home team's jerseys and pay them to storm the field if Bama loses the game.
