like i posted above, they have no problem using it or not calling out other african-americans for using it, it does not cut both ways, either it is offensive or not, not on which race or color uses it.

If you’re not African American I don’t see why your opinion on the word and who should be offended by it should matter.

i am german, so the word kraut offends me, and if i hear other germans using it i tell them not to.too many people want a free pass as to what they can do or say based on it's a cultural thing, others do not understand.

Someone referenced "zero-tolerance" on this thread. This is similar to the person who puts an end to a bully's shenanigans by punching the bully. The bully's nemesis gets suspended for fighting in a zero-tolerance world.
The teacher - like the bully - is acting stupidly.
The recorder - like the bully's nemesis - put an end to the stupid behavior.
She should be lauded for being clever enough to document the foolish actions of the teacher and have her suspension reviewed in light of the circumstances.

Separately, if we have "zero tolerance" then we're not, by definition, very tolerant are we?

If it’s that much of a problem for you, feel free to say the n-word all you want … at work, around friends, here on GC, wherever you want. Let your true self shine, so everyone can see what you are…. Please…

so if the teacher was sexually assaulting a student and another student caught it on film to expose it, you would advocate the teacher go to jail and the student be suspended?

Talk about creating a disincentive to do the right thing.

Great point… it must not be offensive then, huh? You should walk up to the largest black you can can find and test your theory. Let us know how it goes.

Bad, but at least change of pace from black students beating up white teachers.

Have you considered the possibility they only find it offensive when whites people use it, and the reasons behind that?

that is stupid, offensive is offensive no matter who says it, it is clear you just want to perpetuate a arguement on who should be allowed to use offensive words, so i am done with this topic, over and out.

What exactly makes this story political? Why would anyone, even right wingers, look at this story and express any sympathy with the teacher or animosity toward the student? I dont understand people anymore.

The school is simply embarrassed it spread around even though the student did not post it on social media. They know someone did so they suspended the student.

maybe you should have figured that part out before accusing other posters of being partisan while acting as the standard bearer of political objectivity.

That's not true, though. The person saying it matters, and that's not something unique to the n-word. Italians have names they call each other but would punch you in the nose if you said it to them. Jewish Comedians say things about themselves and other Jewish people that would get anyone else labeled antisemitic. The fat people I know talk about their "fat asses" all the time, but would be offended if some stranger called them a fat ass... examples are endless.

You know it's wrong, it says a lot about you to act like the teacher has a point ... he doesn't. The old "you say it so I can say it too", which is what they teacher was arguing, is rooted in racism.

Personally, I dislike the word no matter who says it. I just don't like it.

But who is using a word often affects how a communication is received. Mel Brooks can make Jewish jokes and Jeff Foxworthy can mock rednecks. Women sometimes refer to each other (affectionately or in anger) by using words that a man would probably not say to women or maybe even around women. And the N word has a particularly nasty history. Really makes me wonder when White people like this teacher throw the word around so freely knowing how that's going to be received. It's like they seem to think they're being clever by pointing out a double standard that no one else has noticed.

Ta-Nehisi already covered this "double standard"

Coates first pointed out that it is normal in our culture for some people or groups to use certain words that others can’t. For example, his wife calls him “honey”; it would not be acceptable, he said, for strange women to do the same. Similarly, his dad was known by his family back home as Billy — but it would be awkward for Coates to try to use that nickname for his father.

“That’s because the relationship between myself and my dad is not the same as the relationship between my dad and his mother and his sisters who he grew up with,” Coates said. “We understand that.”

The same concept applies to different groups and their words. “My wife, with her girl friend, will use the word ‘bitch,’” Coates said. “I do not join in. You know what I’m saying? I don’t do that. I don’t do that. And perhaps more importantly, I don’t have a desire to do it.”

Coates pointed to another example — of a white friend who used to have a cabin in upstate New York that he called “the white trash cabin.” “I would never refer to that cabin” in that way, Coates said. “I would never tell him, ‘I’m coming to your white trash cabin.’”

Ta-Nehisi Coates has an incredibly clear explanation for why white people shouldn’t use the n-word

I don't expect his clear explanation to persuade. There is perhaps no deprivation so keenly felt and obsessed on as unfair, as white people's inability to use the term freely without social approbation. To hear them tell it, never in human history has any group been so oppressed as they, at least in this regard

So this teacher has been working in this district for as long as the student filming the racial comments has been alive. One must wonder if the teacher had a history of inappropriate, unacceptable language….. or this was a one-off incident.

The student’s suspension is unfortunate but rules are rules.
