The slow lane in particular is absolute garbage on I-95.

Cape Hatteras National Seashore. Nothing else like the Outer Banks. I liked it so much I spent 3 years in Greenville after UF.

Anybody mentioned Biltmore Mansion? Loved the lake in Ashville. Also, very few rest stops.

Driving the Blue ridge parkway, or hwy 64, ,or 281, or a ton of other mountain roads in a car designed to handle well.

The late summer early fall leaves

    Waterfalls

Cool summer temps in the mountains while FL is baking.

Burls on 107 going up the hill? Gone now, but used to cruise down from Cashiers when Jackson county was dry. That was back in the day, early ‘70’s.

Kept this flyer from one of my surf trips in the mid-70's.....would go every year - sometimes more than once a year, driving up from Florida. Usually the ESA Championships in Sept. The Mad Hatter! :emoji_surfer:

Large portions of Days of Thunder are set in North Carolina... It is also home to the giant killers of Appalacian State.

In the sixties and early seventies for me, always stayed at Cape Hatteras campground. Tents got blown down more than once. Of course this was late August and early September. Shared waves with Mike Oppenheimer at Ramp #22, a five ft hurricane swell. Little did I know he would go on to win the ESA contest that year.

Its grown on me a bit over my years here. I hated it when I first moved here. Drowning shredded pork in vinegar isnt bbq to me. But some guys really have it down.

Heck half of NC hates it. :D

But I'll take my sauce thick and red like the other 49 1/2 states. :D ;)

Yep. Burls where anyone with money could buy alcohol as long as you found it on 107. It was dry past the 70's in my neck of western NC (Lake Toxaway in the Summers).

I used to work at HH in cashiers over summer break back in the day. Driving between Lake Toxaway and Cashiers was a daily adventure.

Burls is like the secret handshake of western NC....if you knew you knew.

Where my life long appreciation of being on the water started. Wasn't fancy but man I had freedom (as much as a lake provided) FB_IMG_1695325787583.jpg

Raised on the stuff, and much prefer it to ketchup, and sweet.

Add an hour more from my location. Was always about 12 hours.

One year when a couple buddies and myself all qualified we rented a Coleman popup camper and drove up. I had forgotten about this but was reminded by one of them recently that I ragged on the 3rd guy because he didn't have his license and couldn't help with the driving! Having co-drivers was important!

Or a bicycle. Some great climbing to be done there.

215 from either direction to the Blue Ridge Parkway is awesome. Fie Top Road is really hard.
