Florida Satanists are volunteering to fill school counselor roles after Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) signed a law allowing religious chaplains into public schools amid staffing shortages.

“Nothing in the text of the bill serves to exclude us, and no credible interpretation of the First Amendment could. Should a school district now choose to have chaplains, they should expect Satanists to participate as well,” Lucien Greaves, cofounder and spokesperson for The Satanic Temple, said in a statement to The Hill on Monday.

Back when DeSantis signed the bill in April, he described Satanism as “not a religion” and said its members would not be allowed to participate in the program.

But Greaves said the governor “openly lied to the public” regarding the situation.

Who didn't see this coming? All chaplains should be allowed to serve if you are opening schools up to them

DeSantis doesn't care. He wants to destroy public schools. This serves his cause.

The Satanic Temple does not worship the devil. It's just a name that it uses. When you research the Satanic Temple, you find that it is way too much of a sensible religion to be helping out in public schools.

Tampa Jack is right … Satanists are all about logic and reason. I think they would probably have more to offer in schools than ancient superstition and imaginary friends in the sky… plus, you never hear about Satanists molesting kids and covering it up like you do with the Christ based religions…

Wow. Literally posting something so hateful aimed at any other group would garner huge attacks from most people and justifiably so. But here you are getting pretty green checks for it from the "tolerant" crowd.

    Mind numbing.

    Your post is highly offensive.

The facts are also on his side, when it comes to orchestrated and systemic coverup of sex abuse.

The SBC and Catholic Church have had huge scandals.

Im sure it’s a numbers thing, in that the “satanist temple” is a small group of activists types, there is less opportunity to have some major scandal. Nevertheless, the churches had those pedo priests and they did what they did to cover it all up. Any large group is going to have their bad seeds, it’s the coverup that is the major issue when it came to those particular faith denominations. But really that applies to any entity (not just religion) that would provide cover for their bad seeds instead of purging them (no different from “back the blue” when certain people try to rally behind cops who clearly commit bad acts).

When these groups abandon what they stand for and rally behind “members” at any cost, it’s almost like a gang mentality or something you would see in the animal kingdom. It means intelligent thought and accountability has been abandoned in favor of something else.

What part is wrong, though? You should be mad at the people who turned Churches into fronts for grooming and molesting, and those that look the other way, to give them this reputation — not those who want to stop it.

I’d be more comfortable letting my kid get council from a drag queen than a volunteer Chaplin. These volunteer positions to be around kids (Boy Scouts, youth pastors, etc.) seem too easily infiltrated by pedos.

Nonsense. You went straight after faith in general with your comments about imaginary friends in the sky comment.

Who here hasnt called out the evils in the church? You just want an outlet for your disdain of people of faith and you think you have it here.

When you say things like that, it is very personal to those of us who have dads who are ministers, friends who are youth leaders, have worked in non profits dealing with kids... etc.

You are doing exactly what you probably accuse others of.

You will never see me discuss when an LGBTQ person commits a terrible act, because those acta are never indicative of the group.

But you have your soap box, by all means keep breathing the thin air way up there. It makes you one of the people you think you are not. It makes you just like the guys who start the LGBTQ/trans threads.

    It's ignorance.

I am more pointing out his flippant mocking of faith in general. And how was I wrong about my assessment? Could you or I say that about a race or gender issue without a huge backlash?

His belief in it is his problem, but his saying it here in the face of people that it is deeply meaningful to is just mockery.

    You disagree?

Thing is, there is no law allowing LGTB promoters to be in schools (quite the opposite, actually, since “don’t say gay”) trying to spread their beliefs like there now is for religious groups, so you really don’t have leg to stand on to trying make that argument. These groups should receive scrutiny and the well earned criticism.

These to be a case of “the truth hurts” with your feelings.

    Dude. Stop.

No one is saying you cant have the conversation about grooming from any group.

But you can be decent and be cognitive about who is reading your posts, and ask yourself why you feel the need to mock people for simply believing in something bigger than you do.

You arent trying to have a discussion. You are mocking people that think different than you. The exact opposite of what you likely fancy yourself as.

War, I definitely get what you are saying. I think this might a case where alternative perspectives are difficult to inhabit. While I can understand your underlying arguments, the language you are using is definitely going to come across as inflammatory. And I think this aspect of communication is under-appreciated.

Even though it would mean the same thing, I would think so much differently about Trump if he said things like, “As much as I value the diverse skills and cultures of our immigrants, a sovereign nation must maintain control over its borders.” Instead, he says things like “We’re going to build a wall because Mexicans are sending their rapists over here!”

The phrase “imaginary friends in the sky” is definitely more like the latter than the former. I can certainly agree that many religious beliefs are not derived by scientific means, but I know you don’t mean to disrespect the posters themselves on here.

It goes both ways, though, Tilly. I mean saying your beliefs are "something bigger" than my beliefs are an example of the condescension Christians throw around all the time. To me, there is nothing "bigger" than science and an understanding of the universe that doesn't involve supernatural lore to explain it. I mean, to get back to the topic, what was the last nice thing you had to say about Satanists? They are wonderful people, IMO.

    Weak man. Just weak.
I mean something bigger than ourselves. Bigger than natural minds can comprehend. Faith in the unseen. Bit its weird that that benign comment bothers you while you mock the faith of billions of people.
    Lol. What? Seriosly?

How about this. You show me the last time I said anything unkind about them? I'm not asking you to wax poetic about religion, I'm simply asking you to not be insulting a degrading about it. Is that too much to ask?

I figured you wouldn't be able to acknowledge your own shortcomings when it comes to being insulting and degrading. But when I do it, you are always there to tell me about your feelings.

I don't know what "bigger than ourselves" means. There are a lot of things that bigger than me. Bears. Earth. The Universe. Dragons are bigger than me, but they are not real. Science is bigger than me, IMO, and a real thing. You can call it "unseen", but if I say "imaginary" or "invisible", which are literally the top synonyms for "unseen", you get mad about that?

I’m not sure “satanists,” as a religion, are real in any meaningful sense (or at least aren’t distinct from liberal political cranks). It seems the only times they show up and “exist” is when there’s an opportunity to protest religion in the public sphere and try to make Christians uncomfortable in the process.

All that being said, okay. Who cares?

The IRS gave it legitimacy, so it’s as real as any religion. DeSantis cares, though, he specifically mentioned keeping Satanists out of schools when signing the bill, which is blatantly unconstitutional…

Satanic Temple: IRS has designated it a tax-exempt church
