Could be a state sponsored assassination attempt rather than just “crazy”. Hopefully they catch the person either way.

It just came out the Iranians were plotting to get John Bolton back in 2020, but that plot was foiled.

Honestly, I'm amazed he has made it this long w/o an attack. How long has there been a bounty on his head now? 20 plus years?

    Since 1989, I think.

I don’t know about “hands down.” My vote is still Porn Gil.

Still, a very good one. For the uninitiated, Rushdie was able to convince David that he could translate the fatwa into getting laid.

You have to admire the discipline of laying low for like 30 years until your fatwa target's guard is finally down

Since January 1989, so 30+ years.

Edit: I just read that there have been “several” failed assassination attempts against Rushdie since 1989. This is just the first that has hit flesh.

I’d have no problem if we took out the Iranian Ayatollah in response.

You understand, that this action would cause a war.

It didn’t when we took out Suleman.

A war between who? What are they going to do?

Seriously I’m not saying it’s a great idea but I wouldn’t have a problem with it. Issuing FATWAs are an act of terrorism.

It would be a 48 hour war, Iran is small potatoes.

Big difference. Qasem Soleimani was the head of an international terrorist organization, operating outside the borders of his country, in a country where he had planned and led terrorist actions against Americans. He had declared himself a legitimate combatant by every traditional standard. While I would not miss the Ayatollah (any of them, really; I would dig up Khomeini just to hang him if I could), killing a head of state inside his own country would indeed be a step too far, even for me. I also worry that pulling our ships out of the Pacific for a confrontation with Iran is precisely what China, Russia, and Iran all have in mind.

But I do hope that this situation with Rushdie (and to a lesser extent Bolton; let’s be honest, who would miss him?) is enough to make Jake “Hope as a Strategy” Sullivan wake up and pull out of negotiations with the Russians and Iranians. We are so being jerked around, and the Russians/Iranians think it’s funny how stupid we are.
