Both parties do it, its' just that Republicans do it much better and in many more states. The Democrats tried extreme gerrymandering in NY and it backfired with Congressional districts being drawn by an independent special master, somewhat similar in Maryland with the original proposed gerrymandered districts being redrawn. On the hand in a number of states for the last several elections Republican representation in both the state legislatures and congressional districts in the state has far exceeded the proportion of votes that Republicans actually received, Michigan, Wisconsin and Pennsylvania coming immediately to mind.

Edit: Should have added that the extreme Republican gerrymandering in Pennsylvania has also been overruled by the courts and Democrats could actually make gains in the 2022 midterms.

 

Extreme gerrymandering by either side is undemocratic. That said, there seems to be far more examples of extreme gerrymandering by the GOP.

 

Yeah, Democratic states tend to have fair districting amendments with state courts that are willing to uphold and enforce those laws.

Republican states, on the other hand, either don't have any restrictions on partisan gerrymandering, or have captured state courts that would never strike down a map favoring their party (e.g., Florida).

The combination of that means Republicans are squeezing pretty close to the maximum relative advantage out of Gerrymandering.

Interestingly, when SCOTUS rules next year that even state courts cannot restrict gerrymandering, it may actually backfire on them as states like California, New York, etc. start implementing extreme, Texas/Florida level gerrymanders.

 

There's also Jim Jordan's district in Ohio. Includes suburban and rural counties while completely excluding urban areas.

 

Regarding gerrymandering, the GOP made a big push into State legislature races in 2010, knowing that the census would be providing for several opportunities to redraw districts the next year. It paid off.

Now I know you are extremely partisan if you think Dems are just starting to gerrymander.

 

Well, they have always tried. But to stay on brand, they are sure to self-sabotage, usually getting their own plants in the judicial system to overrule the few instances of competence they manage.

 

I can understand why Republicans feel under attack, but the problem is that there is no way to sugarcoat it. The truth really does hurt sometimes. The 1/6 Commission is bipartisan, with Liz Cheney as a key leader on the panel. She’s not some bleeding heart liberal by any stretch. Strong conservative values. It doesn’t resemble a legal proceeding because it’s not a legal proceeding… nor is it intended to be. Nobody will be convicted or sentenced as a result of the Commission.

Vast majority of those testifying are Republicans and former Trump loyalists. It’s irresponsible not to watch, IMO.

Personally, I think deep down Republicans aren’t watching so they can claim plausible deniability.
