(GYM) Road to Nationals NQS Standings Week 9

I guess I just don't understand what you wanted or expected to gain vs where we are now.

 

I want the highest NQS possible and for UF not to be sent to Auburn where the Tigers will be hosting. That's a rabid Auburn crowd that could have an impact on the regional. I don't know how I can be more clear.

 

And I don't know how I can be more clear....the highest possible NQS doesn't necessarily keep us out of Auburn, going to Auburn really shouldn't keep us from advancing, and ultimately being healthy and ready for postseason is simply more important than feeling good about NQS during the regular season.

Let's use a baseball analogy. Say UF is ranked third, but in the mix to be one or two seed. Would you have your ace throw 90+ pitches in the final series trying to get a W and improve your seed? No intelligent coach would do that, because the difference between a 1-4 seed is neglible. More important to be healthy and fresh.
Jenny has had UF well positioned all season. As I keep saying over and over, regionals should be a formality barring disaster....but if they have a disaster performance it really doesn't matter where. Heck, Ive seen countless NCAA regionals in multiple sports where a lower seed had an easier road....somewhat luck of the draw.

 

We both agreed the SECs are not important. Take time off and rest that week. Why am I not surprised that this approach doesn't please you even though it meets your objectives for regionals and nationals?

We will have to agree to disagree on seeding as we have with the NQS all season. It's my thought that if we can lock down the 1 or 2 seed that it becomes less likely that UF will have to go to Auburn. The selection committee or whatever they are called for gymnastics could send UF to any of the host locations, but I like UF's chances better at Raleigh with the higher seed.

 

I too disagreed with a strategy that had overworked the top gymnasts in years past. Highest marks should not have been the priority early in the year. I praised Jenny for changing her strategy which had us peaking too early in the past. I still believe that she has done a great job with this team. She should still be resting her gymnasts by allowing the new young greats to get in more meet time. This is a well rounded team with more gymnasts able to fill in when necessary.

It is not about you or anyone else being right or wrong. It was differences of opinion about the team we all cheer for.

 

They usually pick in order of closest or preference based on the seeds.
Given that Auburn will be last choice for everyone probably, just don’t finish fourth. Right now we look decent for that.
My fear is that they will do what they did to us in Corvallis, and back seed based on where Auburn finishes. So if Auburn finished 6th the third seed has to go there. In that scenario they could even finish 7th and the 2 seed is screwed. Hopefully they learned from that and will play with the seeds a bit.
But bottom line, shouldn’t matter where we go. If we can’t beat the 11th team as a three or the 12th team as a 4, that’s on us, if we are remotely who we think we are.

Why do you like our chances better in Raleigh? Our concern will essentially be over the #3 seed there. How do you know the 3 seed in Raleigh will be weaker than the one in Auburn? Not that it matters, but I'm guessing we go to Raleigh regardless. Who else gets sent there as a 3 is a total guess at present

 

That last paragraph is the salient point....and is a huge reason why I'm not overly concerned with being 1-3. If that's our concern we have much bigger issues.

 

they seed it now like basketball, so it would be the 6, 11 and 14. Though they sometimes shuffle a bit for various reasons. But that’s my point, as a 3 or 4, if we can’t beat an 11 or 12 (assuming the 5 or 6 perform well) we weren’t winning a title anyway.

 

Yes....we just don't know who gets slotted into those 9-12 spots just yet. And often a higher seed may in actuality be an easier path....they may be struggling and on a downward arc, injuries may have hit, etc.
And if we somehow blow up and fall apart, it's unlikey to matter if it's at AU or Raleigh

 

They will do this - that's the policy. They only shuffle the seeds when multiple hosts would naturally fall in the same region. Which means we are not even safe from going to Auburn if we finish #1. If it's UF #1, Okla #2, Aub #7, Auburn would have to be shifted up or down 1 and since Auburn is a bus-able regional for UF...it's entirely possible/likely that the committee would send UF to Auburn and the #8 to Oklahoma. It's really not something the team can control, the chips will just fall where they fall.

But I'm also not really sure why this is so concerning. We just had a very solid performance at Auburn and I wouldn't be surprised if we're liable to have more trouble in a dead gym at NC State. Anyway, good scheduling by Jenny to give the team practice meets at multiple possible regional sites - they should be plenty prepared when regionals roll around either way.

I'm going to try to watch it streaming on the ESPN App/ACCNX. YouTube TV doesn't carry SECN+, but they have been allowing me to watch the + offering anyway, sometimes takes two times signing in. This will be my first attempt to watch ACCNX. I plan on trying to give it a test drive earlier in the day, keeping my fingers crossed.

 

I have not been able to access ACCNX from the ESPN app (also a YTTV subscriber). Very annoying

 

I'm wondering if Jenny will go for another very high road score tonight or if she will rest some of the key performers. Hoping to see some 10's tonight!

 

I'm expecting a combination of performers and no 198+. It's not what I would do as you know, but it is what I predict Jenny will do.

 

just played with accx and found it let me watch fsu at gtech io softball on my 3rd attempt to enter the event. keep your fingers crossed for me. i will watch mich st at uk on sec+ if i can't get in.
