The quoted post has no place on this thread and I refuse to quote it in it entirety out of respect for the deceased. I hope it, and this response, will be deleted.

By supporting Pol Pot and undermining the Shah Carter caused a lot of grief. I believe in even-handed assessments

I remember Daniel Pipes thanking me for promoting his book on the radio. I agree with what he says here:

I hope we all can show even a sliver of the grace and service Jimmy Carter showed in retirement. He never stopped living his faith in a way that honored it.

Just after I graduated HS in the early 70s I was a tree surgeon for a year. My crew was contracted to the phone company to clear ROWs in SW GA. We worked all over - Buena Vista, Lumpkin, Camilla, Sylvester, Albany, and Plains. I always parked my truck at a gas station overnight and in Plains, as it turns out, I parked it at Billy's Phillips 66 station. I always filled up at the station I parked at as partial repayment. In the afternoons he and the boys would be shooting the bull and drinking beer as I and the long-haired hippy crew returned and gassed up for the following day. Eventually they got used to us and were friendly. Never saw Jimmy among the coke-crate-sittin' beer drinking crowd.

I am no fan of Jimmy as President but this thread was started as a remembrance and it has become something else, so I am locking it.
