@mdgator05's comments should assuage your concerns.

That being said, the USA has many types of speech that may be considered illegal in narrowly defined circumstances. For example, defamation (1804), incitement to imminent lawless action (1969), fighting words (1942), threats and harassment (2003). In many of these cases, the law has been even more narrowed through subsequent legal challenges. So it's seems to go in the opposite direction of your fears.

As a community, we've accepted that threatening and harassing a former spouse may be illegal. I feel Bill 94 will no more dovetail into speech erosion in Ontario as the Violence Against Women Act did to us.

I think the Canadian proposal is rife with problems. Punishing someone for how they think, what they think, or the even the ability to have that thought, is wrong on every level.

But I can’t help but shake my head in not understanding how someone who so vociferously opposes the Canadian law because of inherent problems, cannot see why the “other side” is so zealously opposed to DeSantis’ War against Gays.

Why is it ok to hate a law that stops one from speaking out against gays, but not ok to stand up against laws designed to silence and censor gay lifestyle.

It makes no logical sense at all.

By the time it got to that I’d have long left the country (on track for the next five years anyway) my hate for red states and most of their voting populace shall not be abridged!

Yes, defamation, harassment, threats...things like this are punished under US law but not hate speech. Hate speech laws are not compatible with free speech. And that is what makes us different than Canada. And that is what is problematic with the Canadian law. It punishes hate speech.

So many promised to move to Canada when Trump won. Of course, like Twitter, they just can't leave good ole 'Murica.
