It’s not normally my kind of music, but I’ve heard some songs by Caamp that I quite liked. There’s a song Wildfire by Mandolin Orange that sticks in my head because it’s so haunting. And this is maybe slightly adjacent musically, but the early stuff from The Wood Brothers is pretty close and great. I’ll check some of your recommendations here.
I just stumbled across the 502s recently. They're from Maitland and can't wait to catch them on tour. Strong Avett Bros vibes Caamp just has that raspy voice that does it for me
Not sure why but this article reminded me of hearing a western singer when I was in high school. He lamented the term Country and Western because he thought they were two different genres being lumped together. And now today, C&W gets shortened to being just Country.
I’m a little more into the indie folk groups like: Hiss Golden Messenger (new album dropped yesterday and it’s great) Rose City Band (amazing pedal steel - seeing them in a few weeks) Steve Gunn Cass McCombs Megafaun
Yeah, I lean a little more bluegrassy in my "Americana" listening, but like it all. I know of Hiss Golden, I'll have to check out the others. Thanks. You'll probably dig Fruition if you haven't heard of them. They have amazing harmonies. Their most popular song is bluegrass, but most of their stuff isn't. This is one of my favorite songs ever.
"Puff the Magic Dragon!" I'll never forget a folk group - two guys and a gal like Peter, Paul and Mary - who I heard sing in a bar in St. Augustine back in the 60s. The song I remember was "I'm A-Crackin' Up from a Lack o' Shackin' Up."
I just listened to the song for the first time. I also viewed many successive interviews with him including both "right" and "left" news channels (tongue in cheek with the "news" reference). His song hits the spot..it is the reality we face today. And by the way...he has no political affiliations...just like me a true independent...Im so sick of the division and vitriol from both sides...it has to stop or just like his song nothing will change...it starts with us.
given the description, I insta went & listened to their KEXP performance. They remind a bit of Lord Huron too; granted I don't know LH that well. Had YLT tix for sept, but it's been postponed. Turns out Daniel Donato is playing the same night, so at least I don't have to be conflicted.
I want to thank all you youngsters here for the tips on new bands to check out. Got Fruition going right now. It's really great with streaming to have access to just about everything, as long as you can find out about it in the first place. Watchhouse (formerly Mandolin Orange) and Jake Xerxes Fussell were two of my more recent discoveries but that was a year or two ago.
I still long for the rhythm and blues of the 50s. Like "Annie Had a Baby" by the Midnighters. Annie had a baby Can't work no more Annie had a baby Can't work no more Every time we start to work She's gotta stop and walk the baby 'cross the floor
I caught that dude here in Richmond back in the spring. Have the hat to prove it. Killer show. Definitely way more cosmic than country but I’m not complaining. IMG-9015 hosted at ImgBB
