Opinion | The Rich Are Crazier Than You and Me

Krugman is dead on here. Basically speaks to crazy tech bro billionaires who seem to be falling for this nonsense.

Tech bros appear to be especially susceptible to brain-rotting contrarianism. As I wrote in my newsletter, their financial success all too often convinces them that they’re uniquely brilliant, able to instantly master any subject, without any need to consult people who’ve actually worked hard to understand the issues. And in many cases they became wealthy by defying conventional wisdom, which predisposes them to believe that such defiance is justified across the board.

Add to this the fact that great wealth makes it all too easy to surround yourself with people who tell you what you want to hear, validating your belief in your own brilliance — a sort of intellectual version of the emperor’s new clothes.

And to the extent that contrarian tech bros talk to anyone else, it’s to one another. The tech entrepreneur and writer Anil Dash tells us that “it’s impossible to overstate the degree to which many big tech C.E.O.s and venture capitalists are being radicalized by living within their own cultural and social bubble.” He calls this phenomenon of venture capitalism “VC QAnon,” a concept that I find helps explain many of the strange positions taken by tech billionaires lately.

I don’t have all the answers, but you can have all the drones and survellience you want, if as soon as you enter the country you declare yourself a refugee, you are in. Full stop. Then you are relying on them to declare formally apply for refugee status and later show up for a hearing.

Either that process needs to be changed or you have to have a physical barrier. While you can’t have a physical barrier everywhere there were places where a barrier was going to be put up but when Biden came in they stopped it. The materials just laid there. Later Biden did completed part of the barrier but with cheaper materials and not reinforced at the bottom and easy to dig under.

RFK, Jr.'s anti-vax crusade can and did have real consequences resulting in avoidable deaths especially among children

Anti-vaccination advocates double down as measles kills 50 Samoan children
One of the largest players in global anti-vaccination advocacy is Robert F. Kennedy Jr’s Children’s Health Defense, which a study recently found pays for a significant proportion of all such advertisements on Facebook. Mr Kennedy is the nephew of former US President John F. Kennedy. His family members have distanced themselves from his views. In the wake of the infant deaths, Mr Kennedy’s organisation ran social media posts questioning the safety of vaccines and did not update them when the true cause came to light.

An article published almost 70 years ago from an extreme outlier. Got it. Even the title is deceptive since Enders actually proved the existence of the measles virus. Here's a link to an actual paper by Enders.
The Development and Evaluation of an Attenuated Measles Virus Vaccine
The commonly accepted facts on the disease and it is caused by a real virus
    Measles
    • Measles is a highly contagious, serious airborne disease caused by a virus that can lead to severe complications and death.
    • Measles vaccination averted 56 million deaths being between 2000 and 2021.
    • Even though a safe and cost-effective vaccine is available, in 2021, there were an estimated 128 000 measles deaths globally, mostly among unvaccinated or under vaccinated children under the age of 5 years.
    • In 2021, about 81% of the world's children received one dose of measles vaccine by their first birthday through routine health services – the lowest since 2008.

    From the article …

Enders also admitted to other agents being “isolated” along with measles and that they could not distinguish any difference between the CPE they claim was caused by a measles “virus” with the CPE produced by one of the other agents. This is just further evidence that these were not purified/isolated samples and that they assume that whatever “virus” they believe is present must adhere to certain CPE changes even though there are other agents which can produce the same effect. The CPE observed is not specific to any “virus.”

Me: virologists are people who presuppose viruses and see them into existence.

Not sure how necessary or helpful it is to invoke Nazis when vaccines have been mandated in lots of places, including in the United States.

Don’t be too squeamish, lest you miss the point. I wouldn’t even pick on Democrats, as the graph does. Clearly, nearly half of Americans were so readily brought to fear that they snitched on their fellows and signaled their willingness to send the ‘unclean’ [substitute Jews ?] to prison and/or snatch their children.

The difference being this particular vaccine didn't go through the typical FDA approval process. We were forced to take it without having any data on the long-term side effects and ooops, the virus mutated and the vaccine was rendered largely useless. I mean, there's a reason all previous mandated vaccines went through a 5 to 10 year development and testing process before FDA approval. They're supposed to be tested to assess whether the vaccine is safe and efficacious. We should really stop acting like people don't have a right to be concerned, at the very least.

I find it throughly disheartening how readily Americans were hammered into supine terror and roiled into enmity for one another.

Even in early 2020, back when I still believed in viruses, I was dumbfounded at the actions being taken and the greater readiness to comply with them.

Maybe you're making a different point than RFK, Jr. is if you're talking about the Covid vaccine only. Without getting to whether his argument is even true, I think his position is that no vaccines have been safe - at least in part because they don't go through the same testing process as other drugs. Much of what I have heard him say about the dangers of vaccines was said way before Covid came along.

    And he was probably spot-on.

But never mind vaccines, prescribed medications generally carry risks and people die from taking them as prescribed.

I assumed the Nazi reference was to the Covid vaccine mandate. I could be wrong and if so, my apologies. And I believe you are correct regarding his general stance on vaccines, but the Covid vaccine took it to another level.

No, I’m saying present-day Americans are no more discerning or stout than 1930’s Germans and perhaps less so.

The assertion that vaccines don’t go through a similar process as meds is false.

Also, having a placebo controlled trial for a new vaccine, when an existing effective vaccine already exists, would be unethical because then you are asking parents to have some kids be effectively unvaccinated against dangerous diseases.
