You mean culturally or legally? Culturally, maybe. Legally, no.

How about this, we just have one big state and no senators at all. Final offer.

Based on the principle of taxation without representation there is always the alternative of exempting residents of DC from Federal income taxation.

I mean physically. If everything but The Mall, White House, Congress, and SCOTUS was ceded back to Maryland, those areas would all be surround on all sides by the state of Maryland.

get some HS kid to design it like our current flag. He did it for a HS project and it was accepted in 1960.

Would a land bridge of Virginia territory (so that you were only surrounded on three sides by Terrapins) be persuasive?

I do not think so since Maryland owns the all of the Potomac river and Virginia stops at the the water's edge. Nitpicking here but it would allow Maryland to control all ingress and egress to the Federal Government Zone.

I object to the use of Roman numerals, sir. The Romans were racists and practiced slavery. We must use numbers from a culture that was not historically racist or had slaves. I’ll start doing my research now …

That would be quite a challenge. We currently use Arabic numerals and like the Romans that Arabs were racist and practiced slavery and did so much more recently than the Romans.

I know. :( That was going to be my first suggestion. I've already eliminated most known cultures, Chinese, Japanese, Egyptian, Sumerian, etc. This might come down to the written numbers of our neolithic ancestors before slavery was invented (can't speak to racism; I imagine the "us and them" of the day was, like, the Hill People hate the River People)

Why not make it part of Virginia? We already got Baltimore, don’t need another crime ridden city

There goes the alphabet too then. Smoke signals and monosyllabic grunts?

Neither party wants DC incorporated into Maryland and Virginia is out of the question considering that what was the Virginia part of DC was returned to Virginia two decades before the Civil War.

Incorporating the District into Maryland would pretty much assure that Maryland would never elect another Republican to the Senate although theoretically that could change if the Republican Party reverts to what it was when it included politicians like Jacob Javits or the Mitt Romney who governed Massachusetts. Democrats are opposed to it because they still want the two additional senators that they would acquire if DC became a state as well as the one and possibly two House seats and the three electoral votes. If DC were a state Maryland actually would benefit fiscally considering that it has a higher per capita income than any of the current 50 states.

If DC becomes a state, the gop would demand another " new state" to balance it out. Very similar to pre civil war America where free and slave states were added to balance each other out. Different topic but same dynamic. Some things never change.
