I looked it up there is about 900 million acres of farmland in this country. So China owns close to 4 percent of farmland.

The devil is in the details. If we prevent the CCP from buying land in the US, what is to stop them from funding an American company to buy land in the US? What about private ownership by members of the CCP? What about private ownership by American citizens who have family members in the CCP?

This is just one of those “We’re getting tough on China” bills that actually means nothing in a global society. Republicans are always talking about getting tough on one thing or another like getting tough on crime, or drugs, etc. but pretty much all they do is talk. The Japanese own most of Hawaii, and the Koreans own a good number of golf courses in this country, so this type of foreign investment is nothing new.

Not sure what you mean. US citizens can acquire land / property in China. Are you suggesting that therefore China CCP members should be allowed to acquire land in the US?

That was my point. I didn’t know and stated if.

To allow anything close enough that interferes with or can interfere with our air base electronics is dumb.

The article says all foreign persons own an interest in 37.6 million acres, not china specifically.

Chinese investors only own about 200,000 acres of the ~915,000,000 acres of current farmland, or about .02%. And that's before talking about all the acres that could be converted into farmland if necessary (including the millions of acres we decommission every year). Or the fact that we could always seize China's land if needed (it's not like they can take it back to China).

If China held an appreciable percentage of farmland, I could maybe see the value in placing limits, but this seems like a solution hunting for a problem to me.

Which is somewhat lost within the Senate bill language. The bill appears very broad and isn’t specific to address the concerns on proximity to strategic military sites.

Geez, really? 0.02%? This reminds of the scare when I was kid that Japan was going to buy all of America because they had bought a lot of buildings in NY at the time. I remember people saying “They couldn’t beat us to they are going to buy us”. The stuff about the military bases is a legit concern and Huawei equipment should be banned here (I thought it was) with criminal charges for using it…. But a ban sounds like an over reaction at this time.
