Careful you are making a sensible argument to folks that hate reason. Personally my religious beliefs and my secular stance are different on this issue as well.

I did not mark Newsome down for anything. You can check my record.
Apparently you take politicians too seriously. I have marked you down accordingly.

No, its my honest way of saying a person can both have a strong personal conviction yet love their child unconditionally. Do some liberals struggle with that?

    Is that wokeism or germaphobism?

How do you know it isnt principle?
A LOT of people have deeply held - principled - issues with gay marriage.

It seems him and his son are just fine. So why is it any of our business.

To me he showed the ultimate in loving tolerance. Son, I disagree with this in principle, but my love for you is unconditional.

Come on man, this would be like Clarence Thomas getting caught driving a relative to an abortion clinic in another state, then being like, "I love my granddaughter and want what's best for her" as an excuse. Of course people will correctly call these people out as the worst kind of hypocrites.

Why do some cons struggle with admitting hypocrisy when they see it?

Why only show tolerance when it's his son and not show the same tolerance for other people's children? I think I know the answer... It starts with an H.

There is nothing hypocritical about loving your child. I’d be unhappy if mine chose that path but I’d still love them and be as supportive as I could.

You do understand it's not the " loving you child" part that makes them a hypocrite, right?

Possibly, but it can also change someone. I didn't really feel like bringing it up because its my family but my cousin came out as gay over the last couple years and her father is a staunch Trump guy and also pretty religious. He would have most likely voted against gay marriage but I've never specifically asked him. When she came out, he basically shunned her. He said he wouldn't go to her wedding etc etc. A couple weeks later, he made a complete change. He walked her down the isle during her wedding, happily.

    People can change...

Is he a big states rights guy? Not saying thats it, just asking? Is it possible he has no issue with gay marriage but just feels that the feds shouldn't be involved? Like it or not, some people genuinely live in that space.
I see it more like CT loving his daughter as she leaves the clinic. Not holding animosity or hatred even though he had a fundamental issue.

As someone who has changed my view on this subject, I can speak from both views honestly.

I dont believe God designed men to be with men, but I also believe that certain rights within our system are available to people I disagree with within that system. Thats why I say marriages of the state dont mean much to me. I view mine as a marriage between my wife and myself and the church.

If you've only ever had one pov on the matter, it can be hard to understand how someone can live in both worlds and try to do so honestly and without hateful malice. And in this case show the unconditional love of a parent.

The sons pov would be helpful here.

But thats really the crux. He loves his son more than his political position, this may even be a deeply held religious position (no idea).

If my 18 year old (pretty liberal at her age :)) daughter runs for congress someday, should I not attend her swearing in because I disagree with her politics?

What if my 16 year old daughter choses a career path that I have issues with, should I avoid her graduation?

Even worse, what if my 11 year old son gets a call from Kirby or Saban or drafted by the RedSox or Maple Leafs?!?!? Should I never root for him again?

The love for your child is not a sign of hypocrisy. It is just bigger than anything else.

Being unhappy is one thing. Voting to deny the ability of other parents to unconditionally support their children in the way he supported his son is another. And if his side of the vote passed, you couldn’t support your son in the way he supported his, whether l you were happy about it or not.

No one ever said he didn’t love his kid. That’s not the problematic side of the coin.

Fair post but I think the whiff has to be a pretty deep sniff. Finding hypocrisy here is just an effort by some to make something out of nothing.

    The guy loves his kid.
He loves his kid more than politics or he wouldn't have gone.

Wish certain other politicians put their families first. (Thats a shot at the orange guy btw)

No level of government should recognize nor deny marriage. For god’s sake, is nothing sacred? What’s next? Baptism licenses? So dumb

Lost in all of this is the point you bring up here. How do we know that his son didn't simply wish for his father to be at his wedding while knowing his stance and vote on gay marriage? That would throw a wrench into this stupid thread.

He loves his son. Has no issue with gay marriage but doesn't think the feds should be involved maybe?

Has he been on the record ripping gay marriage previously?
