Where did anyone ever get the idea that rights exist to shield people from the consequences of an act that is not itself enshrined as a right??

 

Yeah, if this is really a big factor steering the kids college choices these days, we've reached rock bottom.

 

It does not seem 'rock bottom' to me. When a state restricts access to reproductive rights, such as access to contraception or abortion, it can be a sign that the state is trying to control and restrict the personal choices and freedoms of its citizens. Think of it as a policy proxy.

Conversely, if state restricts access to reproductive rights and I agree with it, that tells me the state will force others to conform to my set of morals. That may appeal to me if I'm frightened by the prospect of being surrounded by folks doing things I don't like.

 

This is assuming every scenario is win-lose. In game theory, there are win-win scenarios and lose-lose scenarios.

Since the “winners” of a culture war get nothing, it is most assuredly a lose-lose type game they are playing here.

 

Wargames taught me that.

 

Assuming those that include reproductive rights along with other factors are necessarily engaging in irresponsible sexual behavior is unfounded and judgmental.

It's a sad false dichotomy. It's also an ad hominem by asserting people concerned with reproductive rights are stupid.

I don't think it will be a return to the 70's when anyone could get in. But it would be nice if it would allow talented in state students to get in. My son knew kids that got 1400+ SAT, AP classes all over the place and 7. something weighted GPA's and didn't get in. If you have those kinds of stats, you should be able to get in to UF.

 

I would be willing to bet that enrolment numbers aren't going to be affected at all. It just may be that the type of student is different and made up of kids that love UF and want to attend.

 

This could end up being a zero sum effect. Kids fleeing reproductive right oppression may be replaced by those that desire it.

 

Interesting that from the actual poll, the largest percentage of respondents were in the ‘no factor at all category’.

We will see. If, as many believe, certain people are coming to Florida because of its policies, I see no reason to think the reverse can't also be true - that some won't come or might leave. I still tend to think most people choose where to live based upon financial and family considerations.

I have no doubt the school will fill its enrollment no matter what happens. If the quality in education drops in the state, that will just lower the quality of student at all state universities and people with more competitive/attractive options will go elsewhere if they have the money to do so. The people left behind might be more willing to engage in campus activism and that sort of thing TBH, particularly if the state continues to view state colleges as the enemy.

 

They can add it to their billions in "non profit" that they have raked in.

 

If only the abortion ban were the only crazy law these clowns have or will have passed.

There's a bill going through the system now to let anyone living anywhere run for a Florida school board seat. Not only would you not have to be local, you could win a Seminole County seat despite living in Utah.
