I have radar guided cruise control and I wish I could turn it off and just have regular cruise control like my older cars did. I hate the radar feature.

Cops are way too lenient. There are way too many people that do not know how to drive and are disobeying traffic LAWS. If you dont want tickets, repeal laws on the books.

Why? The old way meant you constantly had to brake and reset the cruise every time there was a speed differential (every time you came upon a slower car). New cars you just set and forget the speed and it adjusts itself based on traffic, but if you want to accelerate and pass you just hit the gas. Maybe it’s me but it’s like having that on eliminates my desire to pass as frequently. With lane keep assist it’s almost autonomous driving. Although lane keep assist has had some issues in whatever car I drive. More experience and some odd “glitches” with it has me seeing where true autonomous driving still has a ways to go, admittedly I turn that off 99% of the time now. The cruise on the other hand does a better job doing what it’s supposed to do. I see no downside at all from it.

I don't like that it slows me down. Without it, either the slow driver moves out of the way or I go around them before I would have slowed down. The radar is too automated for me. I'd at least like the option to turn it off. I have an S-Class which is loaded with tech, but man it's annoying. The lane keep assist is annoying, too. Damn near jerks the wheel out of my hands sometimes.

I just thank god that driving a car isn’t a constitutionally protected right. Before long it will all be automated and it will be glorious.

    Yup,
The self driving jetson mobiles will make all this moot. Cars going the same speed, stress free napping. The horror!

It's just not the design of the cars themselves that are a factor. Florida eliminated its mandatory motor vehicle inspections decades ago. Watch some "Just Rolled In" videos on YouTube to get a sense of the condition of tires on a lot of vehicle or their brakes.Or just walk around a parking lot. I am a fanatic about vehicle maintenance...halved service intervals and I actually look forward to buying new "shoes" (tires) for my cars. Others view vehicle maintenance as an expensive inconvenience and put it off as long as possible. You also have to consider driver experience and aptitude. The car might have originally been designed to cruise at 85mph, but that might not be true in its current condition or with its driver.

Also, you have to factor in the average age of a car on US roads is 13.8 years, 11.9 years for light trucks.

If it’s not safe to drive at 85 mph, it’s likely not safe to drive at 75 mph. We can go down that rabbit hole all day. That said, most cars on the road can safely do 85 mph.

Every time I see a “donut spare” on a car in a parking lot I cringe.

I have shared this before. Many accidents happen because of slower drivers in the left lane. As for passing on the right, it gets dangerous when you expect the traffic to be slow. Truckers should never be allowed in the 3rd lane.

@gator_lawyer is looking at it from a different perspective. No one objects to strict enforcement when the violators are endangering persons or property. On the other hand, there are dozens of laws on the books that even very aware drivers don't know about. When SCOTUS did away with the prohibition against pretextual traffic stops in 1996, we saw a flurry of enforcement of obscure traffic laws. I was frequently double checking Florida Statutes Chapter 316 to confirm they existed.

Tint tickets got so bad I had to go purchase the same model tint meter local law enforcement uses. Most know you have to stop at the stop bar at an intersection if there is red light. It actually went to an appellate court to determine if that meant the front wheels or the entire car, including the bumper, had to be behind that line. It's the entire car, by the way, so if 2 inches of your bumper are hanging over, that's a valid traffic stop. That one is a favorite statute of DUI enforcement officers.

"Upgraded" your headlight bulbs to LED? That's illegal (and dangerous.) Tinted cover on your license plate? Probably illegal. The law: "A person may not apply or attach a substance, reflective matter, illuminated device, spray, coating, covering, or other material onto or around any license plate which interferes with the legibility, angular visibility, or detectability of any feature or detail on the license plate or interferes with the ability to record any feature or detail on the license plate."

Turn signal when changing lanes? Always? Never? The law: "...in the event any other vehicle may be affected by the movement."

What lawyers are objecting is not so much that these laws, obscure or not, can form the basis of a traffic stop if traffic safety is the focus. Rather that they can and are used to justify stops wholly unrelated to traffic safety to conduct narcotics (among others) investigations. The narcotics detective can just follow the car long enough and it will eventually do something wrong.

Lane keep isn't great sometimes, there have been times when I'm drifting to my left to pass or give a bicyclist more room on the right and the steering wheel fights me on it ... I mean, it works great 99% of the time but that 1% can be a bit dangerous.

In that first video, the pickup truck was clearly using the left lane to pass big rig trucks, even though the video is edited, if you look closely, he uses the left lane to pass two big rigs in the right lane while the guy in the little car is swerving all over the road and driving on the shoulder to get him around them all ... that little car caused the accident, is an idiot, and would lose his license permanently if it were up to me. Has nothing to do with left lane hogging and the pickup truck would have legally driving even under the new law proposed.

I agree. That accident was completely on the Camaro. I would have charged its driver with reckless driving, a criminal charge in Florida.

This is exactly what my issue is. It’s fighting when you are actively trying to steer your vehicle and maybe hugging a line or crossing it as an avoidance maneuver. To me it seems it could actually cause a crash by fighting driver inputs. It also did that to me in a construction zone where the lanes temporarily shift (but some phantom lines I guess were still visible), and that was where I just decided to shut that feature off. I think several of the Tesla autopilot accidents were this same sort of thing, car got confused by construction and instead of following the temporary lane shifts it went straight on into concrete barriers. For now the technology just isn’t good enough. My car of course doesn’t claim an “autopilot” feature but the issue is the same.

I'm sorry, but if the legislation is too difficult to enforce, then laws need to be changed or rescinded officially. When you have conflicts or convoluted laws, law enforcement takes things into their own hands, either by letting people off because they don't want to deal with it or some of the bad ones will target people based on demographics (age, race, type of car they drive, etc). This is what's wrong with the entire process, the only way to fix it is to enforce laws and do the work to get rid of the laws that don't make sense. It will never happen because it makes money for the judicial system to have a ambiguities. Too much $ in it to change.

It’s ok, but there was never a time so far that I wouldn’t have preferred to make the steering input myself.

You partially understand. No one is suggesting the legislation is too difficult to enforce. Assuming you live in Florida, you are charged with knowledge of every statute on the "books".
