House approves bill to make left lane for passing only

I've never been a fan of left lane hogs, but what does this legislation add that doesn't already exist? There are situations where the roads are experiencing heavy traffic where it's not practical to keep the left lane free. The bill makes no exception for that. And what is Keith Perry talking about here?

I've never heard of it being illegal to pass somebody on the right. It's certainly not in FLORIDA (not on the highways).

    Go GATORS!

They're just expanding cops' ability to give people tickets. And no, I don't think that's a good thing, even if I do hate the people who obstruct the passing lane.

More petty crimes for the state to enforce to swell its budget, this is "the courage to be free" in Florida

Camp in the woods, not the left lane.
While left lane hogs do suck, do we really need new laws?

Particularly in cases like this where it can be subjective on the part of FHP. Whose to say you aren't passing on a busy highway?

People going below the speed limit + in the left lane should be ticketed. Every once in awhile you see an elderly person doing this. Doing like 60 on I-75. I think that creates a hazard and should be a ticket

If there’s traffic, it is what it is. Can’t ticket a person for occupying a lane in heavy traffic. If it’s a wide open road, a person going the speed limit 70 on I-75 is somewhat idiotic, but if a person passes them on the right they had to be speeding to do it - so they would be ticketing the wrong person in that scenario. I know some assholes probably drive in the left lane on purpose and do 70 to act as a vigilante or whatever (I once saw some nutjob weaving back and forth so people actually had to use the shoulder to pass him). But if looking at safety concerns I don’t think that’s the bigger problem in terms of how often it happens. The problem is people doing like 85-90+.

It seems simple to me, that if you are in the left lane and going as fast as the car in front of you, you are fine. If are in the left lane and there is a huge gap in front of you, get over. Making the left lane for passing only is a dumb law ... even by Florida standards.

I’m a slow passer who only drives 5 over the limit. This bill would make me ripe for a ticket.

Exactly. If there’s plenty of opportunity to get over, you should.

But if a driver is going like 75 in the left lane, and another car flies by at 90 and passes on the right or is passing cars left and right, obviously the latter is the one that needs to be pulled over (on top of speeding, it’s reckless driving). I have a hard time seeing how a cop would even enforce this unless someone is just cruising along in the left lane all by themselves for no reason or there is some super senior slow driver creating a crazy bottleneck.

Then you get the morons who drive UNDER the speed limit in the left lane with no one in front on them and a perfectly good right lane with no traffic in it they could move into... but no....

Left lane hogging is terrible and dangerous. It forces people to have to make aggressive moves to get around them and it blocks up traffic for miles sometimes. It was so much better driving on the Autobahn in Germany than USA highways.

Right lane is for speed limit followers. Left lane is for speed limit violators. So now we have a proposed law to give speed limit followers a ticket? Cool. I violate the shit out of speed limits and slow law abiding sheep inconvenience me.

There's already a law on point. This is what it says right now:
"On a road, street, or highway having two or more lanes allowing movement in the same direction, a driver may not continue to operate a motor vehicle in the furthermost left-hand lane if the driver knows or reasonably should know that he or she is being overtaken in that lane from the rear by a motor vehicle traveling at a higher rate of speed. This subsection does not apply to drivers operating a vehicle that is overtaking another vehicle proceeding in the same direction, or is preparing for a left turn at an intersection."

This is what the new law will add:
"On a road, street, or highway with two or more lanes allowing movement in the same direction and a posted speed limit of at least 65 miles per hour, a driver may not operate a motor vehicle in the furthermost left-hand lane, except when overtaking and passing another vehicle; when preparing to exit the road, street, or highway; or when otherwise directed by an official traffic control device. This subsection does not apply to authorized emergency vehicles and vehicles engaged in highway maintenance or construction operations."

This is not making things better. It just gives cops more power to harass people.

Drive the speed limit and watch for motorcycles. Of course some bikers are problems themselves.

DeSantis is sending 76 more FHP troopers to the Texas border today. Feel free to drive however you want on Florida roads.

They should have passed the law for slow drivers that drive in the middle lane from Canada to Orlando and only leave the middle lane to exit for gas.

That does not make a difference in Alachua County. Most of the cops patrolling 75 are Alachua County Sheriff along with an occasional GPD.

What is this guy talking about ... from a fox news link ...

The House voted 113-3 last week to pass the bill. Senate sponsor Keith Perry, R-Gainesville, said the measure is intended to improve highway safety.

"If someone in the left lane is going slower, and you pass them (on the right), you are creating an infraction and you can get ticketed," Perry said.

On a 6 lane road, if the right or middle lane is moving faster than the left lane, you can get a ticket?
