Unveiled this week. This feels so fraught with potential symbolism, good and bad. I can’t believe this has not generated more think pieces. The Emperor that converted to Christianity, had the Eastern capital bear his name, whose mother collected relics, who is key figure in creating views of control of the Palestine that remain with us, who played a big role in Europes post Enlightenment mythmaking of a direct unbroken Greco-Roman legacy as the colonialized. Feels like a bigger deal than is being made, but maybe that’s just me.
The reason/cause of his conversion are still debated. Spirit of the Lord? Strategic? Practical? Sol Invictus? Whatever it was had a profound impact.
