Here is a stat that no one has mentioned... even though some here have mentioned that other running backs need more carries. I love our running back room and I think we have good all around talent at receiver. Sure there are some holes and the play calls can and do get predictable, but there is hope they can at least look like they belong in these lesser games. We'll revisit this opinion in the up-coming meat-grinder of our schedule. But in the MSU game we looked competent running the ball. Can we please make that happen more often this year? We'll see... Against Mississippi State, Johnson had a better game of 15 carries for 66 yards for an average of 4.4 yards per carry. Webb, Jackson, and Baugh combined for 15 carries and 112 yards rushing. There are caveats to everything, but one of the core stats that jumps out between Johnson and the rest of Florida's backs over the past two games has been the yards after contact. Johnson has 55 yards after contact the past two games on 22 carries for an average of 2.5 yards after contact. Florida's other three backs have 107 yards after contact on 31 carries for an average of 3.4 yards after contact. RB yards after contact a focal point for Florida Football fans moving forward
Love to see Jackson, Webb, Baugh get 17- 20 carries in a game. If one of those 3 ave that who do you think would run for most yards. I think any of the 3 could ave 90-100 yards a game. Johnson fan but those 3 just look faster and make people miss more. One should get 15 carries the other 2 around 8 to 10.
That balance act of Webb keeping his feet to almost score was impressive. Jackson is who you want to find creases in the D. He can make people miss. Baugh looks like a 3 downs back. He will do it all, and I don't know how you keep him from getting a lot of carries and keep your job as a coach.
Admittedly, since his knee injury, he is not the same rb. The other rb's need more reps. My perception of BN, he just seems incapable of adjusting period! I doubt we are going to see much change, and I wish BN would prove me wrong.
Baugh is the best back. Not playing your best players is the reason why we are here IMO. The staff seems to wait until they are criticized to adjust. Case in point, (unless he was hurt) what happened to Spierto against MSU? A guy that gets playing time for doing the right things just don’t all of a sudden start doing the wrong things and get benched.
Focus on yardage after contact sounds good, but can they focus on tackling, third down situational awareness, pass coverage, defensive line pad level, spin moves, gap assignment, hitting above the shoulder, or anything that deals with stopping the opponent?
Hasn't happened in 3 years, but we can still hope right? BTTW I was thinking this was a defensive thread. I sure would hate to see those numbers....
Napier is loyal imho to the players and coaches that have stuck with him, regardless of the "we use analytics". He knows which backs get the yards. I would bet in the back of his mind, he also wants MJ to have a good season and get drafted, which is good for our player and Napier's recruiting.
