Rashida Tlaib votes 'present' on nearly unanimous vote to condemn Hamas' use of rape as weapon of war

The House on Wednesday passed a bipartisan resolution condemning Hamas terrorists’ use of rape and sexual violence as weapons of war during — and since — the attacks in Israel on Oct. 7.

The resolution, introduced by Rep. Lois Frankel, D-Fla., and endorsed by 200 co-sponsors from both sides of the aisle, passed in a vote of 418 to 0.

Democrat Rep. Rashida Tlaib, D-Mich., voted "present."

    Scumbags gonna scumbag.

If you google her name & then hit news......the MSM seems mostly silent. also scummy

I have never been a fan of tlaib. Hamas isn’t even trying to take the moral high ground.

I mean, of course rape is wrong. And I dislike her as much as many here.
But they censured her for supporting Palestine. Do you really think she would turn around and kowtow to a meaningless feel good resolution?

I am no fan of hers but she was elected by a majority in her district. There are many diverse opinions in this nation of ours.

Obviously, rape as a weapon in war is horrific and should be condemned. The objection by Tlaib is that it only condemns one army of sexual violence. The Israeli army is known for not engaging in sexual violence, but there are examples where this doesn't hold completely true in conflict with Palestinians. So, I do understand where Tlaib is coming from, unfortunately, she is on the wrong side of the overwhelming sentiment to only condemn Hamas.

I do have unease about the number of civilians in Gaza that have been killed. Conservatively estimated by both Palestinian and Israeli sources, >60% of casualties and deaths are women and children. More than 10,000 are minors. The humanitarian crisis with cities completely destroyed and the absence of safe zones for Palestinians, is potentially going to escalate deaths in the civilian population. I do not understand war tactics at all, so I do not know what is justified or not, only that this cannot leave anyone unscarred.

I agree. 100%. Waste of taxpayer money. Why is our Congress even doing this? Ooooohhh... that's right. They gotta drive the "we gotta send billions to Israel" narrative.

There's always a reason behind these useless resolutions.

Not voting in favor of this seems at odds to me with the notion that she supports Palestine.

Boy, I'm glad to see the House passing meaningful legislation, while killing needed immigration reform - at the behest of a rapist.

It's a meaningless resolution that will protect zero women. In fact, you could argue it puts women in more danger as it drives the Israeli narrative that all of this is necessary and empowers them to continue their scorched earth military strategy in Gaza. Which in turn disenfranchises more women.

Those are 2 diff issues. Yes, the resolution is meaningless. But, there was a vote on it. I am talking about the way she voted, not the resolution.

Not really two different issues. She voted absent because she doesn’t want the resolution to be used as a justification for continuing the obliteration of Gaza - not because she doesn’t condemn rape/sexual assault.

I'm guessing her vote was her way of saying "yes, of course, I condemn rape, but I am not going to support this resolution, because it is mere Israeli propaganda."

You won't find me in alignment with Tlaib very often, but I can't hold this one against her.

She's a third term congresswoman who has delivered for her district and has courage to speak up on unpopular sides of issues. On the other hand, Trump was found guilty of sexual assault and brags about it on video. What does that say about people who vote for him?

I guess the one consultation is that she didn't vote "no".

lol that bill had little to do with immigration reform and to say it did is just being a blind cheerleader for one side.
