“Your beliefs become your thoughts. Your thoughts become your words. Your words become your actions. Your actions become your habits. Your habits become your values. Your values become your destiny.” Gandhi This is good stuff. Great way to reflect on what your values are…
I love that quote. Here is a similar, slightly different quote, from James Allen, the British philosopher who in 1903 published his classic book As a Man Thinketh: "Man is made or unmade by himself; in the armory of thought he forges the weapons by which he destroys himself; he also fashions the tools with which he builds for himself heavenly mansions of joy and strength and peace."
Here is another quote on the power of habits from Lao Tzu: "Watch your thoughts, they become words; watch your words, they become actions; watch your actions, they become habits; watch your habits, they become character; watch your character, for it becomes your destiny." I suspect Gandhi had read Lau Tzu and was inspired by the ancient Chinese philosopher. It would make since because Lau Tzu emphasized peace and Gandhi personified peaceful resistance. And, of course, Gandhi was a profound inspiration on Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Seems backwards… shouldn’t it be “your thoughts become your beliefs”, at least to a rational person? Hopefully people think about a subject before taking a position on what they believe, although from posting Too Hot all these years, I’m convinced that is not always the case.
It is not my fault. (Scientists) explain that the experience of making a choice is just an illusion that your brain constructs after the decision is made. While it seems like the conscious process of choosing precedes the choice, the order of these events may really be reversed. In other words, your brain tricks you into thinking that you’re making a decision, but it’s already made the decision before you’re conscious of it. Sam Harris writes that the unconscious processes that occur in your brain and determine your thoughts are influenced by things that happened prior to the present moment, outside of your control and consciousness. (For example, when you’re shopping for groceries, you might think that you’re choosing a cereal freely and deliberately. But factors like the ads you’ve seen, the cereals you ate as a child, the taste preferences you inherited from your parents, articles you’ve read about nutrition, the colors of the boxes, and so on direct what your brain is doing as it makes the decision.) Harris contends that a system where your thoughts and actions are determined outside of your consciousness and control is not compatible with free will Is Free Will an Illusion?
