Barring injuries, does anyone expect both Miller & Mertz to be on the roster Sep 2nd? Why would either hang around here only to be a #3?
We need Mertz to go thru spring with. I would think we would pick up another transfer after spring if neither these two are options.
I'm guessing as we are finished at QB for now. I think there has to be some belief in Miller from the staff as a viable option regardless of what he has been able to show in games at this point. Miller, Mertz and Rashada among others seems pretty crowded already.
I would think one of the scholarship QBs will be processed out after the spring if they’re not performing.
Yeah, I peaked at the "Pinnocho" play in Kindergarten (year 2). But I had the house ROCKIN with my version of Phar-O-Jocka. Dolly Parton herself would have broke down in tears...........
A change in scenery, coaching and teammates can impact the performance of a player. Malik Willis (yeah, I'm a Roswell guy) was third on the depth chart at Auburn (Stidham was the starter) and transferred to Liberty and became a household name. He plays for the Titans now. Liberty was the perfect fit to develop his skills. Baker Mayfield was completing about 58% of his passes for Carolina and is close to 70% with the Rams. In addition, it would not surprise me if the QBs we're pining over (Leary, Mccall, etc...) do not change the trajectory of their new team. No one knows if Mertz will revive his career or just be another dude. There aren't many absolutes in the performance of a college football player going from one team to another. Let's give him a chance and see how it plays out.
In no way am I saying Mertz is Joe Burrow 2.0 but while Burrow always made plays with his legs, his passing numbers were nothing special in 2018. Miller for that matter could be more than serviceable next year with an extra year of health and continuity. My assumption is the staff feels like Miller and Mertz will be battling for the top 2 spots and Rashada will get time to learn. Of course any number of scenarios could happen. Rashada could light it up when he gets on campus, someone could get hurt or all of them could stink it up. No one knows but as you said, people shouldn't discount things like a change in scenery, a year of experience, offensive continuity etc etc. Joe Burrow Career Game Log | College Football at Sports-Reference.com
he wasnt sold as a recruiting superstar. To me it was that he would prioritize recruiting more than the previous staff did. Has he? Yes. Does he still have room to improve in that area? Helll yea (figuring out wth Bateman is doing at LB with recruiting as with Sale and the OL recruiting).
That is priority. You can't have two LB coaches and get one LB recruit when it is an area of need. Graham is just going to fall in our lap for 24 regardless of recruiting. You add Pup and one other big time OLB to 23, I'm OK with it. Bateman did get Burney looking like there was a glimmer of hope for him being an SEC level run stopper. As it is, we didn't see enough recruiting or development to say either LB coach has carried his weight. That's wasted coaching resources when there are a lot of good coaches out there and you are a top 10 destination.
He has experience (more than Miller), and will not mope if Rashada beats him out for the starting position. It was a smart decision.
Miller was injured thd majority of year and likely will get a medical redshirt for this year. As such, will have 4 years of eligibility remaining. Has time to learn and grow in experience. Can’t transfer without finding competition for QB role. Already did that at Ohio State. UF has the best depth chart to compete to start currently. Jake Fromm beat out two 5 star QBs for the UGA role. Both 5 stars ultimately transferred as a result. Would be good problem for UF to have.
Miller already burned his RS at Oh St, but agree he will be in the middle of the QB competition this spring. Will be fun to watch the guys go at it
