I think judging Miller at this point is a little premature. I'll give the kid a chance to work with the team before coming on here and stating that he is no good.
It was the one thing that Kitna seemed to do very well, read the defense and get the ball out quickly. That difference, between him and AR, was obvious.....at least in my eyes.
I agree he might actually be really good. The Spring game, the bowl game, scrimmages, and getting processed out of Ohio State could all just be outliers in his performance thus far.
Was Mertz the best portal QB they could bring in - or the best portal QB they wanted to bring in? * one site has him rated as the #11 portal QB of those that have entered the portal machine as of right now, fwiw.
I wasn't thrilled about Mertz based on his Wisconsin performance, but maybe he was a product of his environment. He was a .96 rated 4 star coming out of high school so obviously someone saw something in him. There are some transfer QBs that were underwhelming at their first stops and saw success in a new environment so here's to hoping he's successful.
I can think of one sack in the bowl game that was entire millers fault imo. Chatfield blew past barber and barber did his job pushing him way past the pocket. Using the pass rushers momentum against him. Miller kept backpedaling and walked right into chatfield. He should’ve stepped up and would’ve had a clean pocket. Stepping up in the pocket is def a skill though. And yes, Trask had it for sure
Skink... I was recently informed by someone that is on the Gator's staff that Mullen was more of a "schemer" verses an overall C.E.O. type head coach. (I am sure that we all know this at this time...) He informed me that Mullen would watch tons of film of the upcoming opponent and loved to plan out each week what he was going to do offensively to exploit their weaknesses. Personally, I am very glad that we have Napier on board. The man that I talked to personally at the Heavener Center agreed as well. He said that everyone who is on the football staff and anyone who directly or indirectly connected to the team feels great about Billy. Even the other coaches from other sports love the guy's sincerity and his ability to connect to others. Don't get me wrong, I liked Mullen and supported him but he did not have that closeness, that connectivity when you met him. With Billy... you feel it. I am sure that both recruits and their parents feel it as well.
I, like most, are underwhelmed, but I imagine Oregon fans weren't too excited about Nix transferring in last year. Turned out pretty darn good portal pickup for them. Point is, you never really know how it will turn out at a new school. We'll have to see how it plays out. I wouldn't be surprised if we see Rashada getting PT next year as a true frosh though.
Maybe some, I’m more of a “meh” at the moment. Never anticipated any high profile QB coming during a roster rebuild.
I still don’t think it’s the highest priority to score the high profile QB for one season where the team is sure to still struggle as it slowly becomes more complete across many positions still in need. And anybody who thinks we saw Jack Miller’s ceiling last week isn’t being fair or realistic. So let’s watch Mertz and Miller and Brown duke it out for the starting job with some Rashada sprinkled in, and save more of our limited re$ource$ for linebackers, DTs, WRs, and o-linemen. We’ll be better off for it in 2024 and maybe even 2023
