For that kind of freedom you would have to go back in time to the old New College. The tour guide my son and I experienced called himself Guapo and wore leather chaps over his underwear. Another wore a blue fuzzy bathrobe and black knee boots. It was a wild ride. Neither of them got into preferred pronouns
LOL! Yeah. I was correct on the issue and on the side of solidarity. You were the one who wanted to coerce and force people to do things unnecessarily. The antithesis of solidarity.
Pronouns became a big issue when Professor Jordan Peterson objected to the Canadian government requiring people to use the preferred pronouns. His issue wasn’t the pronoun it was federal government forcing him - at the point of a gun - to speak a certain way. Canadian government forcing you to speak a certain way. US government shadow banning people and posts via social media. US government (FBI) investigating people who spoke out at School Board meetings. 51 former intelligence officials assuring us that Hunter Biden’s laptop was Russian information. Yeah, no worries about anyone trying to silence you, force you to speak a certain way nor mislead you. Government is our friend. How we interact and deal with each other is always a negotiation - I’ve seen folks whine about HOAs…government is simply an HOA with a gun. Pretty powerful
Dude, you were saying that we got it right for hundreds of years, I pointed out that that doesn't mean it was right. So many things like burning women at the stake for being a which would fall into the same era of not talking about pronouns. Apparently some people think we did get it wrong. (pronouns)
No dude. Pronouns is one thing we had right. You can try to change the entire focus to extremes, but this part of our language was fine. You’re on the wrong side of history. And it’s embarrassing. Just my humble take.
My daughter's dorm at App State has everyone write their pronouns on their doors. Because, you know, its important to know the pronoun of the person living behind the closed door. I was surprised for such a granola liberal place like Boone that they were all straightforward pronouns on her floor. I joked when I saw it that I was glad she hadn't nade any surprise changes. .
My son's dorm did that too. Guess what, out of the 30 or so dorm rooms on that floor, as I walked by them only about 6 or 7 had anything filled in on the pronoun line. Hell, my son and his roommate didn't even put their actual names on the door.
If one of her dorm-mates had requested being referred to by a "different" pronoun, would you have encouraged your daughter to respect that person's wishes or use the pronoun she felt was appropriate?
I’m convinced that the only people who actually care about the pronouns are the 6 or so posters who post daily bitch posts on the issue.
I just find it weird that certain people are so caught up, so distraught, over how someone who you have no connection in any way, wishes to be identified.
I would tell her to be respectful to the wishes of that person. (I've covered this a number of times about my view on direct interaction. And how I think i. Those cases you bite the bullet and respect their wish.) Wasnt worried though. Her best friend since preschool is her roommate.
You are missing the point of the thread. Hardly anyone cares what you wish to identify as. It just does not happen. As people live their lives normally (How many times has someone introduced themselves to you with their pronouns? As it is zero for me.). But we have a few that want to force their identity politics to push an agenda. That very small group are the ones that are so caught up… It is embarrassing a University would push this nonsense (the nonsense is the politics and agenda not an individual who might actually use pronouns/very very few who actually do).
