Specifically; sure Gates is knowledgeable and has an opinion that may or may not be correct. Biden may or may not have been wrong on many/most/all foreign policy issues since.....the late 1700's.


But Trump is a ******* criminal. Who accepted election help from Russia. And implemented an overt criminal conspiracy to overturn an election.

Biden could be wrong to...well, whatever degree one thinks. But Trump is a traitor.

 

I think overall Gates was an outstanding SOD. However I think he was overstating the case with this assertion.

In Afghanistan he turned out to be right - while most people wanted to “surge” he wanted to decrease. Ultimately about 10 years later that’s what we did, with little to show for those prior 10 years.

Before the Iraq war Biden said that Iraq should be divided into 3 areas/counties - Kurd, Sunni and Shia areas. Still seems to me that might have been a better outcome.

we don’t have to get too policy wonky on this thread. We prob agree Afghanistan was a mess about about 4 months after it started and Iraq was a disaster, but likely disagree as to why. My opinions come from a tactical level as well as overarching department of state strategy vs military strategy.
