Eh, I hear ya. I'm stoked for the season after that game. This is not a team getting sloppy, this was a tough first game with a roster loaded with talented freshman who will learn from their mistakes. (and who will get their starting Center back soon) I'm not worried about the coaching either. I think the "final version" of Napier's Ragin Cajuns would have beaten that Utah team. He is going to have time. After we win a few games that the doomsayers are guaranteeing a loss on, the mood will swing the other way.
Disappointing press conference. Billy didn't take accountability except for a brief statement about how "we could have coached better." He doesn't seem to understand that bad coaching on his part was the primary reason for this loss. Hopefully he can get things turned around, but to do so he really needs to look in the mirror and realize he has made a lot of poor choices when it comes to the style of offense he runs, the plays he calls, the way he manages the clock, his decision to not have a dedicated special teams coach, and his decision to not have a dedicated offensive coordinator. He needs to understand that his talent is in building and running a football program, not in managing the game himself. He has proven to be very bad at that.
We see it and the coaches see it. Napier surely is working on solutions. They are watching that film and the problems aren’t hard to locate. I’m just a dumb flooring guy and I can figure it out.
And they were almost all new starters. There were some breakdowns but it already looked more encouraging on tgat side of the ball. Lots of room for improvement but that at least seems likely to happen.
I’m not confident on how the players are going to “learn from their mistake” of only having eight on the field. Are they going to self-coach? No, seriously, I get that people are tired of the negativity. I’m not calling for Napier’s head on a platter. I am calling for him to do his [insert favorite expletive] job, earn the millions he’s making, coach these players, instill discipline, and not lose games we shouldn’t lose.
Did we lose yo Vandy again ? Are we expecting to be a top 10team? We were suppose to lose, it was just disappointing how it went down. Sure it on Napierand team leaders have to help him get it done also. They’ve been coached their entire lives to not jump offsides. Maybe they need shock treatment. If the eniture year looks like this we have a problem but this is being overrated too. Results speak for themselves but put the gun down
Game 3, against Tennessee, is going to be a HUGE barometer as to 1) what makes Napier ultimately tick and 2) what is this fan base willing to embrace? As of right now, I feel sort of chilled as to the possibility of some real anger. What I think we can tolerate is to represent against the Vols, even a 50-50 kind of game (depends on the bounce of the ball on any play). It won't stop the typical "We are freak'n UF!!!" grousing, but I do think it would settle down the enthusiastic supporters who recognize the hole we are in.
Sorry to hijack this thread, I am watching the USC/UNC game replay on demand. I am just confounded with the pace some decent but not elite teams can run on offense. THAT is coaching. We looked better in that department, but not at this level. And when I say coaching, I mean they KNOW how to get to the line quickly, get into the proper alignment (no alignment penalty) and finally...NO DAMN FALSE STARTS!
Speaking of press conferences, since staff will have had time to watch tape before the next one, I want to hear them take accountability. I want BN to acknowledge what was poor, and acknowledge that it's unacceptable and that they're putting emphasis on correcting the issues. I DON'T want the hear the "We're confident in our process and sticking to the plan" BS. The silver lining from the Utah game is that it can be used as a wake up call. Maybe they now realize they aren't as good as they thought and need to take extra steps, because they clearly weren't prepared. I think we actually win against Utah if we'd had a tune up game first.
I am afraid that with the type of O BN runs, ball control, short passes will not be very effective against what I think is a really good UT D. I'm just not confident enough in our OL to protect or open holes. I also believe UT will score quick and often with their style of O. We just are not built to overcome a 21 point deficit. If (and I think it's very likely) UF loses by 21 points or more vs UT at home, the fire and brimstone will be hot and rightly so. This is BN's second year. Supposedly, this should be a stronger team and a more unified team. But a massive loss should that happen here at home and any confidence that his game plan will succeed will be badly damaged. I'd have to say this UT game is critical for BN, not that he is in danger of losing his job but he is in danger of losing the fan base imo. Already, every news source and sports shows are scorching UF and its coaching. A poor showing vs UT will only imo validate the news. I hope BN and the coaching staff understand just how vital this game is.
Ever stop to think that your repeated long winded posts in EVERY thread repeating the same thing over and over again probably feed the noise in the system? Just a thought. It’s okay to move on.
The poor expected record this year is a function of Napier. We can’t give him a pass for something he helped create. If we somehow had gotten any of the other top 20 coaches our expectations would be higher, if not much higher, this year. Napier chose this path and it has consequences. The book isn’t close to written on it and it remains to be seen if this approach will work The vast majority of ultimately successful coaches begin to shown major improvements in year 2. He’s obviously not getting fired this year, but this year does set up how much pressure he has next year. If we have a losing season this year he will need a 9-10 win 2024 to keep the fans on his side. There is just virtually no history of a coach drinking for 3 years and then turning it on. The odds of that is like 1 in 50
1997: Chicago Bulls - Utah Jazz game 6. 1997: #2 Florida State vs # 5 UNC at Home College Football on November 8, 1997. I was live on November 15, 1997: UF @ South Carolina. On November 22, 1997 #9 UF defeated #1 FSU at Home. Kirby Smart: Picked up 2 INT vs UF in Jacksonville. November 1, 1997. Guess your up then, huh?
Yikes. Blaming the players wearing the same number (like that hasn’t been going on for a very long time in CFB) instead of the head coach that still thinks he doesn’t need a ST coordinator. Makes a lot of sense considering all phases of our special teams is still garbage after 14 game of the Billy Napier era.
