Who is going to beat them 0-2 FSU, Louisville, Duke, Georgia Tech, VA Tech? Please be specific. The only thing that is a joke is their schedule. They will probably go undefeated.

You are right FSU is no longer in that category. They are not the same team of last year.

He also could have gutted us by running the ball although that is not his preference. He is extremely poised. Mahomes throws interceptions. I hope that is not your barometer for elite quarterbacks especially since Ward threw for 385 yards against us and 3 touchdowns. And what did they give up after the interception? A field goal. It was a harmless error.

This is a long season. I believe (without disrespecting Mertz) that Lagway should have started the game which would have thrown a monkey wrench into Miami's game plan.

This reminds me of the decision to keep Richardson on the bench and play Jones when Richardson was the better option for us even as a freshman. Our program needs to move on from the past. Mertz got us through a 5-7 season basically losing the last 5 games (even though he was injured near the end of it), and now the first game of the new season. It is time to give another QB a shot.

It’s still UM and Cristobal, I give you as evidence the game last year where they handed the win away in the final moments.

They had all preseason to get up for our pedestrian, child like scheme.

Their QB quakes when under pressure.

Time will tell, but I’ll still say 3 losses.
Dropping 1 because FSU looks way worse than advertised.

Meh, One game doesn’t make Ward elite. Certainly not to be mentioned in the same sentence as Mahomes.

BTW did you see how many QBs threw for 350 or more last year on us? Hell the ArKY guy did it with a brand new OC if I’m not mistaken. So throwing for 385 vs our current D with a terrible O really isn’t something special.

And that was vs a team had a small amount of offense.

Time will tell but I’m not giving the guy a trip to NYc based on Saturday.

    Are you saying:
    • That Mertz lost the Gators the last games last 5 season? Gee I thought it was collapse of the Gator Defense that lost those games. In those games (except the last one), Mertz was productive and had the Gators in a competitive position.
    • That Lagway was the better option and should of started the Miami game? I differ with you on that one.
Please note that prior to the start of the Miami game, Lagway had zero playing time in college football. There is a big difference between high school ball and college ball.
The game is much faster and Miami's defense is way better than he ever saw in high school. I will give Lagway credit for doing a decent job but that was mop up duty.

Your comparison of Anthony Richardson and Emory Jones in 2021is somewhat valid. However, Richardson already had one year of being a Gator under his belt. He was a Freshman in 2020 and got that year redshirted. I am sure that Ricardson was paying close attention in his first year and he put it to good use. I do agree with you that Richardson should of been the starter that year.

i guess what he may be saying is that as much as Mertz outperformed himself relative to expectations last year, we need to realistic about his CEILING.

I know the schedule was/is projected to be tough but returning a 6 year senior and keeping the bar with him at QB at 6ish wins….that should be enough to role the dice on Lagway. Mertz is Ingle Martin and Lagway is Chris Leak. We ALL see it

Maybe not even start Lagway the very FIRST play from scrimmage, but sprinkle him in early and often then gradually hand over the reigns to him

The picking since Urban has been lousy, imho. At no point did they go out and hire anyone close to being worthy of the job, again imho. They refuse to go get anyone that’s considered upper-tier, and they’ll do it again next time, unfortunately. It’s the UF way.

lagway should and I think will start vs Samford with Mertz in concussion protocol. Now, how does Lagway perform? I know it is against an over matched opponent but I see two scenarios of how he does…

1). He balls out and plays good to great. Or
    2) he does ok or below average - he is a true freshman and could not be ready at this point

Now, if Mertz is hurt and out beyond this weekends game than it doesn’t matter you have to roll with DJ.

but if Mertz is back and we get scenario (1), I would start DJ week 3. My guess is Billy would start Mertz.

If Mertz is back and Lagway performs scenario (2) above… you can start Mertz but…you must have set drives or plays for Lagway. The transition to DJ will then happen later in the season.

Doesn't this responsibility belong to our AD?

And then at some point, he answers to the big money donators?

You'd think at some point these people would "get it"......

I copied and pasted this post that I originally posted in another thread. Here is what I posted there, below. This seems like the better place for it.

-- All hires after Steve Spurrier --

    1. We hired Zook who had how much experience as a head coach?
    2. Then it was Meyer and for a time worked out well on the football field with 2 Nattys.
    3. Then we hired a DC (Muschamp) who never had been a head football coach at any level.
    4. Then It was McElwain who had just gotten his first gig as a head coach at CSU... greeny.
    5. Then Mullen, who had been our OC that had reached some level of competence at MSU... flaked out on the recruiting.
    6. Now we hire an up and comer from the Sunbelt conference (Napier) that had worked with Nick Saban and Dabo Swinny.

That's a crap-shoot? Two of those hires were not even worthy to be hired as head football coaches for THE only Flagship University of the State of Florida - Zook and Muschamp...

MaElwain was raw and new to the head coaching ranks... another waste of time. That's now 3 wasted hires by our great university... by the powers that be.

That leaves 3 coaches with some experience. All but Napier got to the SECCG, but this is only Npaier's 3rd year. Is he getting enough time to change our team's fortune... or have we seen enough? Either way these next few games will tell us all we impatient fans need to know to make an opinion. An opinion that seems to mean nothing... to the powers that be.

The one thing that seperated one coach from the rest listed above was bowl game wins. Only one coach was the head fooball coach of a New Year's 6 bowl winning team, and that coach is Urban Meyer.

Can we at least hire a coach that has won a bowl game (new years' 6 bowl preferably) next time we decide to hire and head football coach? Is that too much to ask for?

He was like my 5th choice when we took him. My thoughts were: He will at least bring stability to the program.

    Ahhh.... Good times!

I think it really comes down to the guys signing the checks that pay the 35 million. The interim or the new president has no say so in that matter. He just gets to announce when the check is signed.
