Spurrier has said that in the modern game, he doesn't know how someone can win without a qb who can run. I think he knows what he is talking about.
Really good first half! But the second half... well. The game was never really in doubt the 2nd half, but this seems to be CBN's way of doing things. It won't work against better teams. Gotta keep the pedal to the metal the WHOLE game! It was nice seeing somewhat of a "complete" game though. Might be the last one we see this year. UCF isn't that good. All in all, I'm proud of the team and hopefully (not counting on it) it is some sort of corner we turned. We shall see....
I was ok with ball-control offense the second half. UCF would only get back in the game if we had short, 3-and-out with shots down the field. Burning clock would force UCF to throw. Folks calling the second half a disaster are folks that only care about one side of the ball.
All week I read that UCF's nation-leading rushing offense was going to feast on our weak d-line. We hold them to 1/3rd their season average. 108 yards. Part of that was: an offense that didn't put them in bad spots. Goal post changes to "not a quality win, UCF is overrated." This was a dominant defensive win and a dominant offensive first half. Take the W, Gator fans.
I was just happy to see that our Defense finally stepped up and showed some fire and intensity...The 4th down stops were huge...You could sense that the players started to jell as a unit for the first time this season...Pyburn is an engine!
That's a disingenuous argument. People are waiting to see a complete game from both sides for 4 quarters 3 years in to his tenure. No more, no less. People are generally happy for the players that they won because their performances haven't been for a lack of effort, it's a lack of leadership and a coach that hasn't set them up for a winning method. We heard the same things after Tennessee last year. No one was unhappy we beat the hillbillies at home but turtling up after halftime was a mistake admitted by Napier himself and yet here we are again. 83 2nd half yards? FTR, outside of a few downs where the linemen played pattycake the defense showed great improvement regardless of opponent let alone against a great rushing attack.
The wheel route to Harvey down ucf sideline was over Chiles. He actually made a really nice tackle on the next play. Freshman LB...learning. UF played a lot of guys on defense all night
On the UCF message board … “It's almost like it is deliberate bad coaching and Qb play. Are Gus and KJ agents from the SEC to bring UCF down?”
For me the highlight of the game was when we were 3rd and 3. Or was it 3rd and 5? Anyway, I yelled at the TV, “Throw it sideways!” Sure enough, we threw it sideways. No gain! I’m a genius!
While our wins aren’t impressive, our losses no longer look as bad. I agree with most here: next two games will show more than first five.
Billy really is the reincarnation of Ed Zaunbrecher!! when we thrown down field offense looks good. When he dinks and dunks we go backwards. that could have a moment - bury the opponent, actually show you want to be here and can actually play a full game well. Nope. any team with a legit offense would have put us in a very bad situation in the 4th quarter last night. UCF is bad and Gus must be on the take.
The D did well because UCF is truly one dimensional; Gus knew Jefferson couldn’t throw and score. Our issue is playing defense against teams that can run and throw.
I understand ball control offense. But ball control without scoring is stupidity with a defense that was not our strength until this first half. Not a smart strategy to win in my opinion.
