The mismanagement of the talent this offense has is staggering and negligent imo. We should be a 30 ppg team. I really believe Napier would be a successful HC, not saying NC title caliber, but way more if he had a legit OC. The talent IS there on this team to compete with anyone but the playcalling has sunk him. He would be a great Bobby Bowden/Paterno figurehead head coach but his determination to prove he can be an OC as oppose to being an overseer is what’s going to get him fired soon
We have plenty of personnel and execution problems. You can blame that on HC also but there's blame to go around IMO.
On another note, the Vols had Tre Wilson on lockdown. Larger point: I expected this year prior to his injury.
They are obviously taught to stretch the rules until they get caught too many times because they held jerseys behind the shoulders all night long and were incredulous arguing with the refs each time they were penalized.
Florida got 10 points on 5 red zone trips, UT got 10 points on 2 red zone trips. OT is basically a competition of red zone offenses. Analytics and how the game had gone up to that point both tell you to go for the win in regulation. But Napier has as much feeling for the game as an unconscious quadriplegic on anesthesia.
This has been Napier's fatal flaw at UF, IMO. He's only a mediocre OC to begin with. I don't think BN has the bandwidth to handle calling plays while being HC during the game. Not many HC's can nowadays. That doesn't mean he can't be involved in some aspects of prep during the week, but he would be more attentive to the other details if he just let an OC run the offense.
Disagree. Those guys hired great coaches around them and demanded accountability. BN continues to suffer lapses that that are egregious. His “support staff” has no demanding leader and while Bowden seemed a nice guy, we all know he’d sell his soul to win.
im not saying he will be THEM, im just saying he’d be better off NOT being the OC/QB coach, hiring someone to do that role, and overseeing other aspects
The importance of a good assistant coaching staff is no small thing as it's critical to developing talent. Under Urban Meyer we had a very talented group of experienced assistants. Several went on to become head coaches. Billy's staff looks very young and inexperienced to me.
Bizarre as it may be, Mertz hasn't been a sneak qb for us, and it showed why, as he gets little push. Either use Lagway for his gifts on the sneak or design a different play for Mertz. I don't hold CBN blameless for the result of a play that shouldn't have been run in that situation.
Go back to last year's UTk game. We ran a similar scheme, as Arkansas did also this year, and we blanked them in the first half also. I think some players played great, but we are not a hugely improved defense over all compared with last year. The formula to beat UTk's offense is out there.
I tried to deny it for the longest time, but for just one example. I don't believe we have had more than one successful sceeen play in 2.5 years. How is that possible? That is on the OC in quality control and playcalling. This is a staple in the game that is necessary against great pass rushing teams when you have a subpar or mediocre pass blocking. We are hamstringing ourselves, and that goes directly to CBN.
