How do we know we cannot play man? Though it's been a few cycles, Mullen and staff recruited 15 DBs in consecutive cycles. Hard to believe we cannot field a group of five winners. Weird, to say the least. None of us can identify what are the real issues. I have to believe it's part coaching and scheme.
I’d like to see both Kitna and AR in at the same time, with AR at tailback. Have Kitna lateral to AR, with two wideouts ahead running down the field. AR has the option to throw or to take off running.
Only in man free, or 2 dog otherwise the safety is manned up on the trips side. FYI man is man (cover 0), you are talking man free a different animal. 5 wide vs man free isn’t great without studs for a 4 man rush with 1 LB in run support. on second thought maybe they are using your ideas given our performance or lack there of. Don’t forget to tell the free defender FS to break coverage to cover the square in route already covered by the corner, leaving the back end open for the post route uncontested.
I’d just like to see if Kitna could move the 1s against an SEC team with the efficiency he showed against EW
So said some other poster. I have no idea if that's true. But I have seen DB- Marshall running with a receiver all the to the endzone with ZERO Safety support. That's not the way the DBs should be used. That's why we have Safeties.
Yeah, there are hybrid man to man cover 2 and cover 3 schemes out there... So, there's that. The point is we need to simplify our defense for our defensive backfield. I think it might just be TOO complicated for them. This has happened before. We had DBs getting lost in coverages and the solution was to simplify the schemes... worked then and I'm sure it can work again.
I see corners losing leverage and unable to cover downfield and safeties disregarding the #1 rule of safety play (deep as the deepest man) I also see tackling in the open field, using the sideline and multiple players on the tackle as a sign of getting better wrt to the corners and safeties. There are bad angles at times but overall their fundamental play wrt to after the catch is better this year for a subset of players. There is the real possibility that fundamentally we were atrocious as a team last year beyond what even our eyes showed us. This coupled with a decimated front 7 makes us a shooting gallery for opposing QBs. It’s almost like a game of horse with the QB calling his completion before the ball is snapped
Yes, I'm not sure we're practicing the fundamentals (blocking, tackling and open field tackling) at all right now. This is one of the reasons why I do NOT like too many ex-NFL type coaches on our staff. They play a different game and they have all the time in the world to team complicated schemes, mostly defensive schemes in our case. Grantham's stank of going to a 3-4 base defense still stinks to this day, but the good news is that we are recruiting several TDs this recruiting cycle. Hopefully so that we can go to a 4-3 base and get back to being one of the best defenses in the country again. In this league we need 4 true defensive tackles on the line and the rest can be changed up in several schemes after that. But the base has to start with 4 true defensive tackles.
CBN knew we’d lack depth on DL. When we added 0 Portal transfers it was and still is a concern. What I said 7 months ago still holds true, we need 2 DT’s in the portal with one being an immediate plug and play guy. You’ll have: Watson McClellan Humphreys Lee Thomas Lyons Hopefully in 23 class McDonald Walker Very well could see 1-2 transfer from 5 making it imperative to get 2 transfers. One plug and play transfer is so important because our strength next year will be Watson and McClellan. Adding a potential plug and play gives us 3 solid guys with depth coming from 5-6 others.
It's usually run with with zone underneath where we have 3 covering deep, but can be run with a man to man type underneath hybrid scheme. The point is still that these schemes MIGHT be too complicated for our DBs to fully understand. There is too much confusion in our defensive backfield and too many broken coverages... We all saw that in the Tennessee game where one Safety was MIA on coverage and gave up an uncontested TD. I won't name names... but that just means he didn't get the signal straight or he forgot what his responsibilities were.
Not sure of your last sentence did you mean 4 down lineman? Playing a true DT in a 5,7or 9 alignment is asking for trouble in the spread run game and contain. The biggest issue for odd man fronts is the absolute dearth of players that are 2 gap players and the established programs eat them up. We need true hand in the dirt DE to complement our interior DT we were renown for having these guys in spades. Playing a tweener who is more suited for sAm playing on the los is hurting us big time. I hope we over recruit the DL for the next 2-3 cycles I would love to see a jet package on 3rd and long with 3-4 DEs rushing with a blitzer or 2, absolute havoc for the offense you can cover the hot and everyone else take a nap because the play is over in 3 seconds with several players “getting home”. good times
Sure. I don’t put that play on scheme, I put it on the player. I’m just not following why Marshall wouldn’t ever have deep responsibility in a cover 3?
