Great point on experience. Growing tired of needs time and we are young as excuses. Tennessee a must win game for Billy.
I was at the game and admittedly my view may not have been ideal, but on Utah’s missed long FG it looked to us that we didn’t even have 11 guys in the field. Even the Ute fans near us were mentioning it. We looked awful and unprepared to play a decent team on the road. That’s damn coaching. Billy needs to fix this or the pitchforks and torches will be coming out.
Before the expectations were crazy and unrealistic. Immediately after Urban it was that we should be competing for the Nat’l Title in year 2. Now we just want to see progress during year 2. 8-wins anyone? I mean, our expectations today are similar to, let’s say, a USCe’s expectations during the mid-2000s. The expectations have actually been lowered significantly. I think a lot of the posters who don’t call it as it is are probably in denial, or dislike negativity in general, or maybe categorizing harsh reality as “negativity”
Is CBN trying to do too much and thus failing at some things? Without seasoned captains, OC, DC, ST, too much falling on coach to keep track of. The whole CEO and delegation dynamic, but you need leaders to delegate to.
Gators fans can actually be quite patient, but we just need to actually see progress being made in order to do so. 4 years with no offensive improvement under Muschamp, 2.5 years of no offensive improvement under Mac, 3.5 years of no defensive improvement under Mullen. I think the defense improved some, which should hopefully continue throughout the season with more reps. Witnessing stagnation or regression is what makes us bring out the pitchforks. The fact that the Gators lost because of sloppiness, bad STs, and poor execution in the second year of a system is why everyone is fuming right now.
Not sure if it’s a must win but we need to be competitive. Getting the brakes beat off you at your house and things will deteriorate quickly
And we probably will. Even the most elite coaches have a tough time making those kind of drastic adjustments in a week’s time.
So on ST alone we had. Missed chip shot FG 2 punts fielded inside the 10 2 guys wearing same number on punt return resulting in a 1st down for them Only 8 guys on the field for a FG attempt. A shanked punt. Why was our ST coordinator allowed to board the plane back to Gainesville?
Future is bright. There’s gonna be some growing pains, but the mistakes we saw are all correctable as Ron Zook would say.
This guy is really struggling. Chris Couch - GameChanger Coordinator - Staff Directory - Florida Gators
Bottom line, the Gators beat themselves Thursday night. Utah is a good team, and, you can't give them second chances. Blown coverage on the first play, shanked punt, missed chip shot field goal, stopped drive turned shirt-penalty, offensive lineman not waiting for the ball to be snapped before dancing like scared rabbits, weird 4th-and-three shovel pass to a slow tight-end, fielding of punts inside the five, no sense of urgency in clock management when down by 21, fielding EIGHT men on field-goal defense, allowing too much pressure on a drop-back QB, scheduling difficult non-conference games when we're still rebuilding and just need wins and tune-up games, and on and on. Good news was Mertz actually looked serviceable, and the defense tackled much better. So, I don't necessarily feel hopeless that future games will look like this. The mistakes were so dumb, they are mostly truly fixable. Hope that happens. I've heard that McNeese State has some athletes from the loaded talent pool of La. We can't take them for granted.
Dooley’s take on Mertz is that he was ineffective early, amassing most of his stats after Utah went soft after racing to a 24-3 lead. Even that last gasp drive amassed only 35 yards.
Oppps… we’ll that changes things. 2-weeks is certainly more than enough time to get them prepared months…. before... Utah
