I think most of Napier's success as a Florida head coach will depend on his ability to grow, change, and make tough decisions. We need to overhaul our passing game, and we need to somehow be a different team on defense next year. If neither change, we're going to be a bad football team both next year and the year after that. I think we need a new coach for the passing game to work, I don't have the answers for the defense because I don't think the problem is any one thing. It's not just Toney and it's not just the players, it's both. It's also possible that Napier limited the passing offense based on Richardson, but I tend to think the lack of a short game is more schematic than an adjustment to favor Richardson, which is a red flag.
I have the perfect solution for that: New players, new coach. Time to hit the portal and the coaches convention.
So we were predicted 7 games but should have won 9?!?!. Every loss makes sense, except the Vandy loss. Im sure in due time we will learn that AR decided in Week 0 to go pro and that pretty much shadowed him on how willing he was going to put his body out there on runs...
Competition at position groups on defense should do plenty to improve the defense. I think an underrated reason why the defense was so good between 2012 and 2016 is because we had so much depth on defense, which not only is a hedge against injuries, graduations, and early NFL draft entries... it creates competition and it makes everyone better.
In my opinion: 1. Not enough BULK along the DL. Can't run a 3-4 with 240-260 pound DE's. Need the 270 and up for DE (and we have that coming in recruiting next season) 2. Need more speed/quick twitch players in the secondary. Recruiting that position VERY well 3. I agree with overhauling the passing philosophy. Granted if AR was a 65% passer, the O would look A LOT better but I think we're not really creative in the passing game but that could be partially due to the current skill set of the WR's. Don't know if we have anyone who's a legit deep threat but recruiting is fixing that. 4. Boy a dynamic TE would help this passing game. Odom could develop into a solid #2 but man imagine a Pitts in this offense. We need to put a bigger emphasis in finding a game changing TE. Doesn't have to be Pitts level, a TE of CI or Hernandez level will do. Hopefully Arlis Boardingham can be that in the near future.
The QB and O weren't perfect by any stretch of the imagination, but they did enough to finish better than 6-6. If the revamping starts anywhere other than the Defense, it would be a head-scratcher for sure.
That was the biggest obstacle to our offensive success. Three different OCs with very different philosophies, and they all looked the same on the field. And a couple times they let slip in interviews that they were running Muschamp's offense, not theirs.
A WR is WR....they line up in a different location on virtually every play anyway. If they can't line up at any WR position that means they don't know the playbook and should be playing at all.
1. Gators are generally known for speed on both sides of the ball, not size. It makes too much sense to make a schematic change. 2. Yes. Speed, depth, competition in the secondary. 3. QBs need high percentage throws to get in that 65% completion area. I feel like most of the passing game is boom or bust. Again, not sure if that's based on AR/WR skillset, but I tend to think it's just bad play design. I would think a short game would HELP AR more than anything. This offense runs a lot of motion, like Jim McElwain, and I think Napier ran a lot of pistol at Louisiana, like Jim McElwain, watch the Jim McElwain Florida passing offense under Grier from 2015. I feel like more designs like that would help this passing game tremendously. 4. Yes, can't rely on that long-term because it's a hard position to find real gamechangers there, especially in Florida. But TEs as good as Pitts can turn an offense from good to scary.
And even if they were running a version of their own there was constant meddling by Muschamp into what they did. I'm sure everyone could read his lips on the sidelines while he was coming unglued and screaming "run the damn ball."
Caleb definitely doesn’t know the playbook. There’s more than just running routes, which I’m sure has option trees as well, he’s got to learn who to block. You’re asking quite a bit for a young guy to learn multiple positions.
