Pete Hegseth, Donald Trump’s pick for secretary of defense, was involved in a police investigation into an alleged sexual assault in 2017, local officials in California confirmed Thursday night.

In a statement, a spokesperson for the city government of Monterey, California, said its police department had investigated “an alleged sexual assault” involving Hegseth, a Fox News host and Army National Guard veteran. The alleged assault took place in the early morning hours of October 8, 2017, at the address of the Hyatt Regency Monterey Hotel and Spa, and was reported four days later, according to the statement.

Hegseth was a speaker at a conference held by the California Federation of Republican Women at the hotel during the timeframe when the alleged assault took place, according to photos of the event posted on Facebook.

The city’s statement did not specifically identify Hegseth as an alleged assailant, but said he was involved in the investigation and that the victim’s name and age were confidential. The statement said that there were no weapons involved, but there were injuries – “contusions to right thigh” – without providing additional details. The city said that it would not release the full police report or comment further on the investigation, citing state public records law.

 

And it apparently caught Trump's transition team by surprise. Nice job of vetting. Get used to this level of incompetence.

The transition team was sent a lengthy and detailed document by a woman who said she was friends with the victim. The accusation against Hegseth had been investigated by local authorities in California but never prosecuted, they said. Hegseth allegedly agreed to a private settlement and nondisclosure agreement with his accuser.

Tim Parlatore, an attorney for Hegseth, said Friday that the assault allegation was “fully investigated and found not to be true.” Asked whether Hegseth sought a nondisclosure agreement with the woman, Parlatore said that “there’s no other skeletons to come out.” He added, “There’s no reason to withdraw that I’m aware of.” Cheung described the accusations against Hegseth as “left-wing media concocted falsehoods.”

Meanwhile, a lawyer for the woman at the center of the Gaetz inquiry posted on social media that the unreleased House Ethics Committee report on Gaetz’s behavior should be made public, a move opposed on Friday by House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-Louisiana), who also attended Thursday night’s gala at Mar-a-Lago.

“She was a high school student and there were witnesses,” the lawyer, John Clune, wrote on X in a plea for transparency of the report.

The 22-page police report, which cites video-surveillance footage, text messages and interviews with witnesses, is unlikely to settle the question of exactly what happened on the evening of Oct. 7, 2017, but offers a detailed, lurid and often conflicting portrayal of the events leading up to the alleged assault. It also reveals that the police involvement was sparked by a request from the woman for a sexual-assault examination at a hospital four days after the encounter.

When she tried to leave the room, Hegseth blocked the door, she told police. She recalled saying “no” repeatedly, but didn’t remember much else, according to the report. Hegseth, who was in the midst of getting a divorce from his second wife after fathering a child with a producer at the network, told police that it was a consensual encounter and that they had both acknowledged it was something they shouldn’t be doing. She told him she would tell her husband she had fallen asleep in another hotel room, Hegseth recounted to police.

Her husband told the police that when she stopped responding to texts and calls, he went to look for her, but came back to their room after he couldn’t find her. The woman returned to their hotel room in the early morning hours, according to her and her husband.

She didn’t remember the interaction with Hegseth until days later, she said. Her husband told police she told him that she had been sexually assaulted three days after the incident, and that she suffered nightmares and “out of the blue she would cry.”
